Covert Radar Detector?

Does anyone know of any good covert/hidden radar detectors?

I want a detector that can be installed in the grill and rear of my 4runner that will not be seen due to the fact that their legality is questionable in my area.

I'd appreciate any help.

K40 makes on that is completly installed within the car. The sensor is in a liscence plate housing that you can mount on the front. Or if you want to be even more covert I know you can take the components out of the housing and place them inside the front bumper. Then you have 2 little lights that you mount in the dash that blink when it gets a signal, and a hidden speaker that alerts you as well... However it is very expensive... I looked at it once and it was about 1000 dollars installed. But k40 also guarantees their products and if you get busted by a radar gun they reimburse you for the ticket.
 
Thanks a lot, the K40 Calibre system looks great, but like you said, the pricing is high and all over the place from the different dealers that I contact.

If anyone else knows of any other brands, I'd appreciate the help, you can never compare too many products.
 
I know with the Valentine you have a little box you can mount over your steering wheel to display the info there, but I think you still use the radar unit attached to the windshield for the sensor... I think it just redirects the info out of the view of the back window.
 
Valentine 1 (~$400) has a remote display ($40) but the receiver still get mounted up on the sunvisor. Its a highly rated unit.
 
Yeah, I have a few friends with the Valentine 1. It is a great unit, but it does have to be mounted in the windhsield which kinda kills the deal for me.
 
I'd researched them a while back and only found two really. The Calibre and the Passport SR7. Either way you are talking a minimum of $1000.
 
I own and use a Valentine 1, and it is fantastic. Has saved me countless times. Unfortunately, posts above are correct. The re-route display is just an alternate route to display your info above your steering column. If you could find a way to mount the V1 highly out of sight, you may have a chance of getting away without sticking out to a cop.

The manufacturers that have the covert style detectors have really capitalized on the market... and unfortunately, the price too. $1,000 will buy you a lot of tickets. I cringed at the V1 price of $399.
 
Whistler makes two versions of a remote mounted radar detector. One is wired and one is "wireless" meaning no wires to run through the firewall. In both instances the radar receiver is mounted in the grill and the laser receiver is mounted to the rear view mirror so it has visiibility front and rear of the vehicle.

I can't vouch for its accuracy but I have a Whistler mounted on my windshield and it hasn't failed me yet.

Sounds great, but I come from the school of thought that in many cases, especially one like this, you get what you pay for. The whistler detectors look like they're very affordable, but I can't seem to find any reviews on how they actually function.
 
^^^ Definately a good buy, but I don't think it's "covert" enough for what he's looking to do. I guess NJ they are illegal. I thought that was only VA and DC.

But I agree, V1 is the way to go if you don't mind mounting it in view!
 
Just remember that out of sight does not mean they can't catch you with it. In VA some of the state police have radar dectector detectors and will write you a ticket and impound the device if you set off their equipment. Probably not a problem if you are driving on a crowded road, but if you happen to be on a stretch of highway with light traffic you're going to get nailed. Two or three years ago they nabbed a guy I work with this way.
 
Most radar detectors worth anything are VG-2 compliant, meaning they can't be detected by the Radar Detector Detector...

My Escort uses that, as does the K40, I would be shocked if the Valentine 1 didn't offer it.
 
That's good to know. I might start using my Valentine unit a bit more now. It's been parked in the toolbox lately.
 
i been using v1 for a while now and it have saved my ass hella times and when i go to cananda it also works with the photo radar they have set up using the euro pop tech... there is also and attachment that u can get so u can mount the display so people cant see....people mod this controller for the v1 and sell it on ebay all the time. One of the plus with v1 is that u can get upgrades when they come out with new tech....soo you are always up to date with ther version. Plus its hard to see anyways ill have some pic of how i set my V1 up its ontop of the rearview mirror...and with tint u cant see it much either

Well I sort of agree. Seems odd that it's much lower priced than the others and its about the same price I paid for my standalone unit.

I think radardetectors.com reviewed it and gave it 4 stars.
