Crack in windshield

Guys,
Last week i had a small crack of about 3 inch in my windshield and my neighbor said that it was due to heat of the sun.

i could see that the crack is kind of internal and could not see it on the surface

is there something i can do on a temporary basis while i wait on getting the windshield replaced.

come on guys, 40+ views and no thoughts, recently i saw a tv ad with a quick fix glue can this be used to put a temp fix, not sure how much a new windshield will be

There's two things I know about this: 1st, as you mentioned, there is a new generation of 'glue' for exactly the issue you have. I haven't had to use it yet. 2nd, my old Trooper would crack a winshield about every 18 months or immediately following a Dukes of Hazzard style jump. I found a local, good ole' boy, glass shop. They'd do the job for $213 cash. If I used insurance they billed $500+. When shopping for a windshield I'd say try the Mom & Pops, let them quote it and then say, "well what about if I give you cash?" There's no 'rocket science' to windshield installs. The chances of the dealer getting wrong is equal or greater than a dedicated glass shop IMHO.

A 3rd thing I would ask about is an '06 windshield. In '05 or '06 the glass got a touch thicker and I am pretty sure it will retrofit into your T4R. There's a good chance that you can't even buy a thin one these days. I would try to learn more about that if it was me...

as i know windshields are pretty tough glass to break besides the crack is internal and on the surface it do not see any crack, still at the corner edge i see a hair line crack of about a quarter of an inch.

i just put some transparent gum tape to prevent any pressure build up at highway speeds due to wind.


may be after sometime i will visit a local shop to inquire about the cost with a cash down deal and find out

Cracked windshield

I received a "star" this past winter in my windshield courtesy of the Utah Hwy Department (they love to use large chuncks of sand in the winter). The "star" was right in front of the drivers seat and eventually it cracked all the way to the passenger A-pillar. I had it replaced when I was in Denver in March for $200 cash.

Well, we were back in Utah for less than a month when I got another "star" on the driver's side near the A-pillar. And I just got another long crack (about 8 inches) in the passenger side near the A-pillar. So, looks like I'll be replacing it yet again.

Not sure if this is abnormal or if the 4Runner is just more susceptible due to the angle of windshield, etc. But, I can tell you that with the two cars I had prior to my 4Runner I never once had to replace a windshield (20 years time).

But I digress, I have heard that you can get an epoxy filler at your local parts store that is similar to what the windshield places use to fill one of those "starts". A frined of mine at work used it says that it works pretty well. Not a permanent fix mind you but will certainly get you by until you can get the windshield replaced. Haven't seen or heard of any tape that works on cracks.
