***Cracked Dashboard Action Request***

lol blame the Japanese. Cars are cars man..everyone of them has their quirks.

I too fell victim to the cracked dash. first was just above glove box as others have described. second one is on left side of instrument cluster. called toyota. case number 1209280480.

I don't really think it would shatter. When mine went off it tore through the dash. It reminded me of insulation you would find in a basement or attic.
i have cracks also....
04 Limited V8 - 103k. One smaller crack near glove box and one painfully large one. The big one starts just above glove box, up complete vertical face, 2 inches into upper dash, then left turn for 4-5 inches. Trust me, will kill resale as confirmed by local dealer when i went in to mess around with a new one. They will take off $1,500 from trad as it isn't repairable. Full retail for part is $1,160. Installation is $835. Online the part can be had for around $850 but shipping is around $50. Plan on getting another 8 yrs out of mine so I'm going to suck it up and do the job myself. The manual makes it look a bit harder than the timing belt I just did - probably will eat my whole weekend. HATE the removal of the two airbags.... Don't care what the manual says on precautions. I'll be crapping in my pants when I both disconnect and reconnect both (steering wheel horn assy and passenger) as when I swapped out the steering wheel on my Accord. Will order part within a week then keep you informed on my adventure.

Wow, good luck with. Take a lot of pictures and do a nice write up if you can!
i always buy the factory service manual for every vehicle i own. Honda manuals are better than those from Toyota but the instructions are pretty clear for this one. I'm going to call and log a case tomorrow. Will see if they'll at least give me the part for cost if i'm going to burn a weekend. Then I'll go to the dealership that i purchased it from to see if they'll fight for me. if everything fails, i'll eat the ~$900.
Im just about to start the teardown of my 4runner....i have removed my dash and it wasn't difficult at all...took a little over and hour....center console does have to come out but thats easy as well. As for the airbags just unplug your battery and turn the key on a couple times to drain any residual power. You will need a torx bit to get the steering wheel bag out. I myself wont be putting them back in but thats a whole other discussion. Toyota interiors for me have always been fairly simple to dissasemble and reassemble. Had an 02 tacoma that i stripped to the sheetmetal in less than an hour

And I just receive a reply from them:

However, please reply to this email with your vehicle's 17 digit Vehicle Identification Number, as we will document your product concerns at our National Headquarters for review.
Also please provide us with your full name, and daytime phone number so that way if we issue a product update in the form of an extended Warranty or Special Service Campaign involving your Solara, we will have the data on file to notify you by mail of our prescribed course of action.
Thank you again for bringing your concerns to our attention.
We look forward to your reply.

I have an 2004 4Runner and my dash has developed numerous cracks all over it this past year. It it also very soft in areas that you can actually scrape parts of it off such as glue.
Has toyota considered a recall or any help for consumers as of yet? It appears to be quite common from this forum?
