***Cracked Dashboard Action Request***

I got this one,

it took them three tries to get it right, (apparently the velour shrinks when cut... and it took them two orders to check what was the issue. My final third cover came a couple days ago, but its at my parents and I haven't had time to pick it up, therefore idk if this third one will fit, but I must say I do like the look of the velour, just a heads up as an alternative to carpet.

Woah, some of those dashes look just nasty. I couldn't deal with it. luckily mine hasn't cracked yet which is surprising. My wife commented on how dry the dash was a couple months ago and I soaked the heck out of it with a interior spray of some sorts. It took a couple of times but it's now shiny and looks well hydrated. I think if I would have neglected it for another month or two I would have had a cracked dash.
Cracked dash
I have an 05 and my dash is cracked along the left side of airbag along the whole top of air vent/ radio along the seem rim in front of wheel to the driver door. My 4 runner is mint. My niece has an 04 with the same exact cracks except more across her air bag. Both trucks are mint. Called Toyota and they said they never heard of such a thing!! What bull.....I believe this is a defect Toyota is not going to deal with it. Very depressed because this really ruins resale value.

I have had two problems with the Coverlay dash cover:
1) I could never get the rectangular box over the airbag to look right, sit perfectly
2) Throw away the silicone provided and go to Lowe's and buy some high quality black silicone . I got some of the provided white stuff on my hands and everything I touched had silicone on it. I got tired of picking it off the Coverlay so I tried a little acetone like I do with PlastiDip. Bad move. The Coverlay faded horribly in the areas where I used acetone . I was able to cover it up/fix it to some extent with Mother's Back to Black. Real pain in the ass. Otherwise it is OK, not great. Better than a nasty cracked dashboard.

my dash is cracked also
My 2005 4runner has been garage kept and not I the hot sun very often at all. When it is, I put up a sun shade AND STILL MY DASH CRACKED. My 4runner is in great condition, well taken care of. No issues at all other than the cracked dash, which is over the glove box. I have two 10 inch cracks running horizontal. My old 99 Honda has no dash cracks and sat in the hot sun a lot. Makes me mad!

These dash pads are horrible. You bump it and it practically falls apart.
How is it holding up?
I'm not sure if it's been mentioned or not, but are any of you guys using a interior protectant? I'm not talking about Armor All either. But something like Mother VLR (Vinly, Leather and Rubber) or 303 Aerospace Protectant? I know some of you guys don't have issues with UV rays damaging the dash, but I think part of the problem is the dash material not retaining moisture. Like your skin, it needs a moisturizer to protect it from drying and cracking . Mothers VLR has neats foot oil, along with lanolin to help keeps things supple and avoid drying/cracking. I've used it on all my vehicle and it does a amazing job at keeping things looking new. 303 Aerospace is also a GREAT product. Just my two cents.

2004 4runner dashboard replaced by toyota
Guys, I called toyota in california not the usual toyota number where you file a claim. I got mine replaced this year by them. I had to come out of pocket $200 i believe total. I got toyota usa to cover the rest. Mine had 60,000 miles on it roughly and i called and complained and they offered $1,000 to fix it. I got the new dash pad for about $900 and had a dealer install it for a few hundred bucks. Not sure if any of you can have the same luck but its at least worth a shot. Here is the info for all of you. I spoke with Tiffany bishop at 19001 south western avenue Wc-11 Torrance CA 90509
Her number is 310-974-7550. [email protected]. I got the dashboard for $995, i got the dealer doing the replacement to match an online dealer toyota of newnan price. The labor price was $712.00 I believe they paid $1500 and i paid the difference of $200. Hope this helps

cracked dash and recall
My dash has been cracking for the last 2 years. Todays major airbag recall on 7.8 million vehicles is frightening since the airbag is located right behind the cracks. "They" are blaming places with high humidity for altering chemicals in the air bag, thus causing explosions. I live in a rain forest in Hawaii! Why aren't the 4 runners part of this recall??? My dealership hasn't stepped up to the plate. Not surprised. I'm afraid to drive my car. Please, please share the number you (skratchtherapy33) called in Calif. I'm wondering if anyone else has had these thoughts regarding the air bag location and potential problems.

You do realize that a car company like Toyota, which makes millions of vehicles in different form, all over the world, does not use 1 vendor for anything. They contact out to multiple vendors for an array of parts. The 4runner may not be included for the simple reason that the affected vendor did not supply airbags for it.
As serious as this is, you actually think Toyota would just refuse to mention one specific model if it were involved?

I called the Toyota Center with the 1-800 number listed in the initial post and opened a claim on my cracked dash. The rep was very nice. It completely suprised me actually. She even advised me of a "Smart Stop recall" for my 4Runner as well. I have no idea if anything will come of my claim, but at least they have record that mine is cracked if Toyota does decide to do something.

I work in a Toyota dealership. We just received this info yesterday. Some may not receive a letter, as I don't know if it only applies to states with high humidity/heat. With it being announced just yesterday, Toyota is in the first stage of notification, which means it could take a few days, or a couple of weeks to receive any letters.
I by no means have all the info, just passing along what I can to those fellow T4R's
