***Cracked Dashboard Action Request***

OK, so I got the first letter in February. I was relieved. Since then, however, no second letter. Did anyone here, get their dash replaced last month? Would it be advisable to go ahead and head on down to my local dealership, with the letter and CSP#?

I took my truck in Saturday for the "inspection", which I guess is required prior to the work? The service guy was aware but did not want to do anything or document anything, saying it would do no good, as there are no parts and I have to wait for the 2nd letter.

After a few minutes, I at least got him to agree to write something up that the dash was cracked and note it on my account. I think he said it would get sent to Toyota, too, but did mention again that there was no reason to do this at this time.

I'm not sure how some shops are doing the work and others not.

I just had the dash done, I could have had it done 3rd week of May but I pushed it to June, because I was moving

This is the part that bothers me (not that you got it fixed, that's good for you)

But that there are dealerships replacing the parts and/or saying "it's not cracked enough."

First off there is no part number referenced for the new dashboards yet, so how are you getting the updated component in your vehicle?

Second there's no TSB to provide inspection criteria, new part number, warranty labor op code, no specific vehicle identification instructions, ect. for the dealership to reference to correct your issue; so how they decided what the new part number is, what type of crack is acceptable, how big of a crack is acceptable, how much stickiness, ect. is anyone's guess.

Basically the dealership you got your dash from just about violated every requirement by Toyota for warranty AND we don't even know IF you got the updated part or they just happened to have one lying around (that could or couldn't be the new part.) This is the type of stuff that can cause issues for everyone.

Maybe we just work a little faster here in NY, all I know is it took 2 weeks to order the part after they inspected it, as I stated the manager said they have done "quite a few already" when I arrived he called the parts department and confirmed they had the dash he put "on hold"

Sunrise toyota Oakdale NY... call for yourself and get your questions answered

Went by my local Dealership just to chat and see if they had heard anything new. They have no heard of anything new. I asked if they are inspecting the dashes before replacement.....they said no, just to call and make an apt once I receive the second letter from Toyota. For now, just waiting on Toyota to get the parts ready. These things usually take longer than expected unfortunately. Hoping my Dash will be replaced before my October trip to San Antonio!

I'm with Blackworks. Our Dealership confirmed they didn't have parts or part numbers.

I will check my invoice I imagine there is a part number available, originally toyota was supposed to get new parts in may so I'm not sure wheat the holdup is in some states

Regardless the further this drags out the more hesitant toyota will be to replace dashes, Crack not large enough, wrong location, etc... they are looking at potential 15,000,000 hrs of labor loss and the cost of 3,000,000 dashes

That's what we're getting at, it's already becoming an issue if dealerships are replacing parts without any proper documentation/TSB/PANT Bulletin/Part Numbers/ect. Which means Toyota will soon be receiving a stack of parts that they can easily reject the warranty on, claim Dealer incompetence and then use it as an excuse to make the requirements even more stringent so they don't have to replace them because they KNOW dealers aren't following procedure.

Not sure that they would do this, but it's good enough reason more than any if they really wanted to cite a reason to make this more difficult than it has to be.

As of Today I checked with my parts department and they have not been issued a PANT bulletin (basically a TSB for the parts department that gives them instructions on what the new part numbers are if any, how to handle warranty claims, ect.), so that means they don't have any updated information regarding the CSP either.

BlackWorksInc do you think it makes sense to have the evaporator core replaced while having the dashboard replaced. If so, how much do you think the dealership would charge to replace? Would they just charge for parts? I am not having issues with the AC but with 125,000 miles on the ODO would it be a good idea to replace while the have the dash apart to save money on labor down the road? All opinions are welcome. Thanks in advance

I replaced my evap core myself and it is a PITA. put some dye in your system and see if you have any indication of a leak, if the evap is leaking your condensation drain hose will glow in the dark. That said your truck is a year older than mine and you are probably on borrowed time. There is a good bit more to tear down to do the evap core than just replace the dash cover at least thats what I remember, I still have nightmares about that repair.

Thanks for the input. I still haven't received the second letter from Toyota so I have some time to decide. I think I am leaning towards having it replaced as long as the price is right. I'll have to talk to a couple dealerships to see what the would charge to replace the the evap while doing the dash replacement. Thanks again

Is the new dashboard a different material? Is it shiny or matte?

Also if i get mine replaced could taking the old one off and putting a new one in hurt any other component like the A/C system, etc? I just dont want anything to be screwed up when i get it back.

thanks for any info!

my new dash looks identical to the old one

I just bought my first 4 Runner today and the dash is cracked. It is a 2003, so it would fall under the recall. How can I go about getting it repaired, or is it ineligible because I didnt purchase the vehicle from Toyota?

I was at my dealership today to have my dash evaluated and it does qualify for a replacement dash however they are still waiting on the parts from Toyota . They confirmed that we will receive a second letter from Toyota as soon they receive the parts and phase two is under way. I went to Bill Kidds Toyota in Cockeysville MD for the record.

Hahah. I was thinking this EXACT thought. Can't wait to hear what toyota says.

Hey all, I got my letter early spring (probably February), but no 2nd letter. I'm at least glad to hear that I'm not the only one...
