Cracked Windshield - Well finally happened...

Happened last Saturday the 18th. Two rock chips that day turned into a nice large crack. It seemed to grow larger the next day too.

Luckily I have Statefarm INS and they have a $0 coprehensive deductible in this case.

Ensure that you get an OEM glass and not an aftermarket glass!

You will hear the difference!

Im sorry but OEM glass is no diffrent than aftermarket. I'm a glass installer for a large glass company and aftermarket glass is just as good as the OEM. The only diffence is price and when you want the windshield replaced.

I just had a small spider type crack fixed/repaired. A rock hit and put a small round chip with several small cracks around the chip. They drilled the spot and put some type of liquid (maybe glue) in the hole and attached this device that seamed to induce a vacuum and then added some type of filler. The end result was impressive. It didn't make it look like new, but removed 60% of the visible cracks. I was told that it would prevent any spreading cracks. Time will tell!

Koz, keep us posted on how it does. I've heard about that fix and if you can cover the problem area with a dollar bill that it can be repair and will not spread. What did it cost?

Sux man, i got one at like 300 miles, basically my first week i had it. It really irritated me. But Im now nearing 13000 and i still have not fixed it, my insurance would cover it, but i have been too lazy.

Most insurance will cover it for free. I didn't pay anything, someone owed me. I think it costs approx $30.

Yeah the crack on my windshield spydered out overnight so it was much longer than a dollar bill so I had no choice.

I'm going through safelight for the replacement. They initially wanted to use their manufactured glass, but I asked if they can replace it with OEM Toyota glass. They said that they would have to get approval from my insuarance, but that since my car was relatively new that it would probably be approved. They said that it'd take about 3-7 days for the new glass to come in.

I've talked to a couple of people at work and they have used Safelite before with good experiences so hopefully they do a good job...

I had Safelite install a replacement windshield when my original, maybe a month old, took a rock hit and developed a long crack. In retrospect, I might have preferred getting an OEM replacement piece, as I immediately noticed that the new glass has considerably greater distortion at the extreme edges, along the curve where the glass bends to meet the A pillars. It can be a pain when looking into a sharp curve, or checking traffic at an intersection. May or may not be an issue for others, depending on seating position, I guess. In any event, if this one cracks, I'll switch back, or at least try a unit from another manufacturer...

The installation itself, however, was fine, no issues there.

I would "assume" so

Its scheduled for 7/5 to be installed. To tell you the truth, I never thought my front windshield was coated with they hydrophyllic stuff. My side windows definitely were.

Just got it replaced by safelite and it looks pretty damn good. On the estimate it said that it would have costed $422.32.

It is in fact Toyota glass as it does have the Toyota etching on the drivers side near the hood. It is drizzling right now, so hopefully I can test the hydrophyllic rating when I go home.

I think OEM glass from Toyota is better in regard to water repelling. It has the "Rain-X" or hydrophyllic treatment on it so water doesn't stay on the glass.

Aftermarket glass will not have this specific treatment and will probably not repel water as well.

yes it may have the rain x substance on it, but rain x also repells the resin that is used to repair rock chips.

I had mine replaced in April of this year and I do not notice any differance in wind noise, clarity, or overall fitment. I do not see or hear any differance and it is aftermarket glass. I lived in Michigan for 15 years and having a new windshield put in is almost a annual event there due to the sand and salt put on the roads in the winter. I can not remember ever seeing any differance between various windshields. In this case I do not think there is any advantage to "Toyota" Glass. For all we know 3-4 different Manufactures make the glass for Toyota and it is stamped Toyota. Who knows. Just my opinon and we all know what those are like!!!!:xnuts:
