Cracks in Prinsu Rack

I just got my full length Prinsu rack installed the other day and just noticed that there are crack lines in the legs that attach to the roof. Do any of you out there that have one of these racks have the same issue? Is it a big deal as far as structural integrity or should I not worry about it. I've emailed them multiple times but no response. Getting a little frustrated with them because he took care of another issue in the same email but didn't answer the question about the cracks.

CBI is only handling any orders placed after June 16 or something to that number. All orders before that are are handled by Zach. All orders fulfilled by Zach will get customer support from him.

Thanks for the info. I think I might copy CBI on the next email to see if it will grease the wheels a little.
If the rack is good structurally I'm fine with it. It's a great product but a response from Prinsu would be good.
 
I have the same on my new Tacoma rack but they are not cracks they are either stress marks or their press brake has scratches on the die. Either way I think you have zero to worry about. Below is a pic of the marks they don't show up as well due to lighting but they are the same....

These are aluminum right? My guess is it's stretch marks or something in their die causing it. Probably not structural, so I wouldn't worry about it. Aluminum when bent can look a little funky.

It could be from powder coating, but that doesn't seem likely as they look to be in the metal themselves.

It's powder coated after it's bent so the marks are before the coating..
 
that's cracks from the bending process. the material stretched on the outside radius. happens when you bend thick aluminum sheet/plate with too tight of an inside radius

Really? It's not that way in my aluminum boat. Anywhere. Plenty of pieces where it has not cracked. I don't know what this is...but quality aluminum and proper tools does not produce cracks in material like that.

If my $60k aluminum boat had that....it would still be on the dealer lot.

One of those weld beads is crooked, you should have left that pile on the lot! :P j/k that looks nice.

I think it has to do with the alloy and process. If I remember right, and it's been a while since I did any sheetmetal bending work; it's about the speed and process that's used to obtain the bend and the material. Some alloys are more prone to "crinkling" or having "stretch marks" when bent too quickly or without a lot of support. Again I could be totally wrong as it's been many a year since I really had to sit down and think about sheetmetal work like that.

Yes, really.
i have 30+ years in manufacturing.
it depends on the bend radius and thickness of material.
if you have a .10" inside radius and material thickness of .25" that will equal an outside radius of .35"
think about the difference between the inner and outer radius and that the material on the outer radius has to stretch material to produce that larger radius.
different aluminums have different properties and some are more suitable than others for bending: 6061 is a no go for bending. the most common for bending is 5052. there are also other factors involved in the manufacturing process such as heat treating or annealing the material to make it softer and allowing it to bend better without cracking.

Yup, this! We see if a lot at work too... alum mfg. Alloy, temper, and bend radius. Thicker material needs a larger bend radius (wider press brake die) to avoid this. But, I'd consider it a cosmetic blem since you are only going to be supporting a couple hundred pounds at best on that rack.
 
Easy check..........

Take a dental pick and a small mirror insert pick into crack areas while looking with mirror and see if it is only the PC or actual metal with cracks.... :nod:
