Crank bolt torque specification discrepancy

There appears to be a discrepancy on what the proper torque for the crank bolt is.

I'm reading on this forum that 217ftlbs is the right number.

However, two different manuals call out 184 ftlbs.

Is there a Toyota tech who can point to a reference that shows 217 is the correct number?

They raised it along the way--I think in '99. I can confirm that the '99 FSM says 217 ft-lbs. (I own a paper one).

Okay... I think I am figuring this out.

From what I have found, 98 and older 5VZ-FE engines have the torque spec at 184 ft-lbs.

99 through 02 engines torque spec is 217 ft-lbs.

I know this is an old thread but my crank pulley bolt just came loose so I thought I'd add my 2 cents. Cost me a pulley from a wrecking yard for $200 and a new S/C belt and bolt. My research has shown that the bolts are physically different as well. The 217 torque bolt, new style, has a thick floating washer. The 184 torque bolt or older style has the flange actually PART of the head. One piece.

(217 on the bottom, 184 on the top)
