Crank Pulley Bolt Compatibility Question

Hey I just bought my 1st timing belt + water pump kit from ebay (aircabinman). I plan on purchasing a new crank pulley bolt for my 1996 4runner. I know there are (2) different crank pulley bolt part numbers due to an update mid-production. I ordered the updated crank pulley bolt from the dealer and my order was cancelled because it didn't match according to my VIN (1996). They would not let me speak with a mechanic. So is the updated bolt compatible with my 1996 4runner? Or am I going to have to buy another older style bolt and torque it to 217 ft-lb? Thank you.

The bolt from 96-98 is part #90105-16031. Torque at 184 ft-lb.
The bolt from 99-02 is part #90119-16006. Torque at 217 ft-lb.

I used the 90105-16031 bolt on my 97 5 speed and just torqued it 217 ft/lb when I did my timing belt on mine. Lets see what others say.

I mean, you are effectively being told by Toyota to use the original part number and torque spec. No need to reinvent the wheel. You're already using the old part number and torque spec and nothing has exploded.

I used the 90105-16031 bolt on my 97 5 speed and just torqued it 217 ft/lb when I did my timing belt on mine. Lets see what others say.

That’s what I did. One 96 and two 97. I didn’t buy a new bolt.

96Red used original bolt for 2 TB changes 374k mi no problems was due a TB when totaled.
01 PO had belt changed at 130k mi don't know who torqued bolt, at 205k mi I did TB with bolt for 01 217 ft-lb so far so good.

I replaced the bolt as the factory manual reccomends it. I didnt see any damage on the threads. So good to know folks reused without issues as well.

If the bolt is not torque to yield i don’t replace it

Everything is torque to yield if you’re strong enough, or work at jiffy lube
