Crankcase moisture

Hey all,

I have some sludgy on the inside of my oil cap and I think it's due to crankcase moisture.

2003 V6

I see in the manual something about a crankcase breather, but it doesn't seem to be a standard type. Anyone know if it is a maintenance part and if it's know to cause some issues with crankcase moisture?

If you're talking about the PCV valve, it's near the back of the engine on the driver's side and it's a pretty standard design. It doesn't take any special tools or much time to replace.

i did not even look, so this engine has a standard pcv? Okay, I will check that out and get one.

Could be other factors as well such as do you primarily do short trips? That doesn't let your oil get up to temp and with the recent cold PA temps can cause the sludge.

Also, I can't remember if there is a baffle under the oil cap. That limits the amount of hot oil that can hit the oil cap, so again you would have a cool spot for moisture to condense.

I don't do short trips. I didn't see anything looking like a baffle, but then again I wasn't looking for one.

It has 200,00 miles and I've owned it for 100,00 of that, and have not replaced the PCV, so I will do that this weekend.
