Crap. I Think Its My Torque Converter...

Well I been having this whinning sound for a while. It only happens when I'm at a dead stop and hit the gas to accelerate. Sounds like a superchager whine. It only happens while in drive. In neutral or park the noise doesn't happen. I really don't want to pay 800 bucks to fix the torque converter. Could anything else be causing it? I ruled out it being the alternator since the noise doesn't happen when in park or neutral.

Hrm. The torque converter is always moving, even in neutral. That it doesn't try to turn the wheels is because you have it out of gear.

So when you tell me that in P or at N it doesn't do it makes me wonder. The two sides of the torque converter are always being turned via fluid hydrolic pressure. The engine side is never not turning at engine rpm and the transmission side will always be in pushed by the engine side. When you physically put it in gear, then does the transmission mesh up the gear and the torque converter.

So. My point. If it WAS the torque converter.. I would expect it to ALWAYS make the noise.

That doesn't mean it still isn't something in your tranny...

Mine has made that noise since I got at 195k. 10k miles miles and a full trans flush later the noise is exactly the same. Im pretty sure its my torque converter but I stopped worrying about it since it doesnt seem to be hurting anything.

Hmmm interesting. I think I read another thread about this and someone said the same thing about the torque converter would be constantly making the whinning noise no matter the situation. I'm thinking it could be the differential because when I hit the gas from a dead stop, isn't that where the most torque goes to the wheels thus the differential works harder to move the truck?

Yeah I thought that was just how these trucks sound when hitting the gas till I read a few threads about it. Other than that my truck is flawless considering the mileage. But I have read stories where the TC can eventually fail anytime destroying the tranny.

sounds drive shaft or a axle related problem, when was the last time you've greased your drive shaft? last gear oil change in the rear diff? have a friend help you and see if its from the 3rd member.

had this before.... my mechanic took down the ATF pan...cleaned the solenoids and filter and changed the ATF oil...GONE.

Yeah thats what I'm going to look into next. U feel better now at first I thought I was having tranny trouble but there can be other things causing it. Excuse my ignorance but whats a 3rd member?

Mine does this, as I posted in the other thread. It's not my diff(s) because it makes the noise while stationary. If it is the converter...I'll have to just let it ride until it goes. With probably around 250k actual miles on it, I couldn't complain if the trans went.

Someone suggested Fuel Filter, wasn't that. May be the fuel pump, actually but I'm not sure. Need to get under the truck and see if the noise is coming from back there.

you really have to go down there and listen closely- we actually thought they were coming from the transmission major parts but we found out that my whine actually came straight from the ATF pan....it was being produced by one of the solenoids...

Gonna have my mechanic check the diff tomorrow when I get my radiator replaced. I'm praying the noise is coming from something as simple as just that.

the best way to listen to it is when the truck is raised on a lifter...safer and you can really focus on the sound source.

Had my mechanic drive it with me today. He said it could be the planetary gear. He told me that the whine only happens in 1st gear and when it shifts into 2nd it goes away. Otherwise the tranny is fine. Shifts normal, etc. He said that opening up the tranny and doing a rebuild/replacement is not worth my time or money because I could go another 40k miles and will still probably be in the same shape as it is now.

Does the whine go away when in neutral or park and gets loader in drive?

Does it take alot more rpm to get the rig moving?

Does it want to stall when pulling up and stopping at a stop sign or light?
