Crawl Control

I used the craw for the first time today and even though I new if would be making some noise I still was surprised at how much noise and vibration associated with this function. It sound like the Titanic was going down. I was not using it for rock crawling but on a lose rocky road. I will probably never engage this function again. How the hell can you concentrate on driving with all that racket going on? very uncomfortable sound IMO

At the higher speed settings it sounds fine, it seems to be just at the lowest speed setting that it sounds like all hell is breaking loose. I think that setting is really meant for VERY steep descents.

Regarding the DAC and the Crawl Control systems, these are pure gimmicks that have no real useful purpose. Only the brain of the driver can analyze the needs of power and speed that are required by trail situations. As one navigates a bunch of rocks there are constantly changing levels of throttle that electric gizmos can't anticipate."

I too disagree, these systems are no gimmick. These systems can do thing that are impossible for ANY driver to do. The systems use/sense your steering angle (direction the vehicle is actually traveling) and yaw rate (angular velocity around its vertical axis). It also senses when the front and rear wheels begin to slip then reduces power and applies braking to an individual wheel (A-TRAC) to keep the vehicle going straight. There is no way this can be done without these nannies. With the assistance of all these computer controlled electrical-mechanical systems the vehicle is capable of navigating extreme road conditions that would be a nightmare without them. I can tell you from personal experiences that these system work extremely well and very easily could save your life and/or prevent major damage to your vehicle.

OMG! Tried Crawl Control for the FIRST time today on our new 2014's maiden off-road trip and I was convinced--until I read this thread--that a) this thing is totally broken or b) crap, now I've totally broken it.

I don't think it's a gimmick, but I seriously doubt I will use it much. When I finally turned the speed knob to "H", the clunking/clanging dropped to an acceptable level--well, maybe not--and I let the truck move along. Wow, very slow even in H. Guess I know why they call it crawling. Any trail that requires a speed that slow is likely one that I will avoid. I'm not into metal bending or ultimate rock-crawling, but it's nice to know I have it--I guess....

Nice thread resurrection.

The lower speed settings really only work going up hill, otherwise the brakes go crazy. As far as rock crawling, I don't find the CRAWL control useful at all. I usually want to go slower than CRAWL operates, and I need to be able to stop in a hurry if things start to slide, tip, or crunch, so 2 footing is the way to go.

It has saved my ass a couple of times in deep snow. On steep inclines, without the ability to gather some momentum, the CRAWL control has been able to ascend where every combination of ATRAC/locker/MTS was unable to.

Crawl Control will sound like a band of gnomes going to work on your engine with a bag of hammers. Yes, it is normal. I thought I had broken something, too. It seems to even out once the vehicle is rolling along.

Crawl control is for old ladies. Sorry, but it's true.

I like this thread. It makes me happy that I do not have a Trail. I knew I would never use the vehicles full capabilities at $40k.
We took my 4R to Sedona and used the DAC on Schnebly Hill Road (not maintained like the trail books say). Talk about a bunch of racket, wow, does not sound right. We just stayed in 4L and 1-2 gears.....does same as DAC without the stressful noises shuttering the truck. I agree with Mr. Eastwood quoter, gimmicks, just gimmicks.

Lol I didn't notice....Just "liked" a post that's 4 years old. Good to know that you have found it to be useful. Watching some of the videos around of people getting unstuck with the system makes me think that it only makes the 4Runner that much more capable.

I imagine it's a handy feature when your foot exceeds your brain's capacity for reason. At my age I tend to be more prudent than I was in my brand new $5,400 19 hundred and 78 CJ-5. :wow:

I loved using crawl going up a three mile river bed in Death Valley to get to a hot spring. There were some twists and big rocks that needed the Crawl to navigate over them, saving my brakes and tires from extra wear, allowing me to concentrate on steering. When I returned there was some dude camping by the riverbed marveling at my 4Runner with an ear-to-ear grin.

Now I'm in Baja and Crawl gives me confidence when I cross muddy arroyos with 2-3 foot banks. Lots of fun.

crawl lurching

the crawl feature in lowest setting lurches like crazy.. Feels like the mass of the vehicle is being tossed around. I cant help to think this stop and go lurching is counter productive to traction. Any thoughts? And can anyone link me to video of the crawl control on lowest setting actually helping someone get unstuck or improve traction? I noticed the Toyota promo How to Vid for crawl control shows the driver switching to the second slowest option...which is a lot more reasonable..in regards to lurching and bumping around in the lowest setting.

I'm betting you were on flat ground when you tried this for the first time?

a HUGE portion of that jerkiness goes away under load - i.e. pointed up/down the hill

Normally if/when I do use Crawl Control I engage it at the 3 setting and then adjust with the knob either up or down as needed. It's not quite as jerky there. But as pointed out above, if your on an up or down slope it's not as bad either. In the 1 position it is trying to restrict you to 1 Kilometer per hour (averages out to about 50' per minute). Try walking slower than 50' in a minute. :wink2:

As stated, the lower settings are really for uphill/downhill, and being in 1st gear helps (engine braking).

I've used mine a few times on my driveway. Honesty my driveway was one of the factors that made the purchase of the trail model prudent. It's beyond wicked.
As for the CRAWL control, it is noisy, but it works well in my experience, even on a steep ice covered hill.

I currently don't have CC on my T4R, but had it on my former FJ Cruiser and it worked like A-Trac on steroids! Very good feature.

There was discussion on the fjcruiser forums about how it worked and a member purposely half stuck his FJ in the sand then videod the results of using his Crawl Control to free itself.....
