Crazy Alternator Saga

Hey all,

Was driving my 86 22re to work a couple of weeks ago and the battery and brake lights come on. Parked, got out, and noticed smoke coming out from under the hood. Lifted the hood and saw smoke coming from the Alternator which quickly began to burst into flame. Luckily I had a bunch of water handy to put it out and then disconnected the battery.

Anyway, I swapped the alternator for a 130 watt rebuilt Denso but after a couple of days she would't start back up. Had an old battery, so I replaced it but had no improvement. Then, yesterday I had to put the jump box on it, and as soon as I disconnected it, she shut down. Anybody have any similar experience...thoughts?

Sounds like it's still not charging.

You say it burst into flames, more than likely your alternator shorted to ground and what ever caught fire was the leak link. I would start checking wires and fuses, especially the main charge wire and all the main grounds. When its running get a volt meter and check to see if its actually charging.
