Create Your Own 5th Gen

I have a feeling this has been done already but if not I think this would be interesting.

If you could design the new 5th gen what would it look like, what features would it have, ect.?

My 5th gen would go back to the size of the 3rd gens but still have the bulky aggressive look of the 4th gens. Although my biggest complaint about the 4th gen was that they looked to plasticy and cheap on the exterior, but i think it could be easily fixed by using better materials on all the trim. A 2002 3rd gen sport edition was by far my favorite as far as the exterior goes because it looked very aggressive and classy at the same time.
So imagine a 4th gen the size of a 3rd gen with less plastic and some sharper curves.
The interior would still have the low center of gravity design (low seats, lots of headroom) and of course the modern design of the 4th gens. An 1/8" input jack for an mp3 player or whatever in the top lid of the center console and red dash lighting.
I would bring back the optional manual transmission and use the 6spd from the Tacomas. I think I agree with the use of a V6 and no optional V8 but obviously a very powerful V6.
Now my favorite part. Bring back the locking diff :biggrin2: along with all-time AWD and all the traction controll but with a switch to turn it off.
No more big rims! 16", maybe an optional 17" on the limited but thats it.
I think my biggest problem with the 3rd and 4th gens was that they kept becoming more and more like grocery-go-getters and I'd like to see the 5th gen bring back some more of its off-roading roots. How can you name a vehicle a 4 wheel runner and make it into a 4 wheel grocery runner with some awesome off-roading equipment that most people dont even know about?
Oh and one last thing, do something about those running boards. Either none or opional rock sliders.
Thats all I've got for now but I'll add more as I think of it.

I think if they had to do it over again, Toyota would make the 5th generation more like the 3rd, at least in size. Even have a 4 cyl. as an option and it would really work (I still can't see a 4 cyl in the new larger 5th).

One thing about down sizing, back in the 70's it really didn't work too good. It was usually better to come up with another vehicle that was smaller and had a different name. People think that bigger is better, maybe that is one reason we have such big cars.

The 4Runner is a bit small for my needs, so I would not want to see it go smaller. Get rid of the 3rd row -- it is pointless. Increase headroom. Make the 4.6l V8 optional. Add 1" ground clearance. Simplify the HVAC controls. More readable gauges. Optional locking rear diff. Keep the tailgate -- no side-hinged rear door like the GX/Prado. Steel bumpers.

For me, I would love it if the 5th Gen looked like a 2002 Limited (basically no chrome and everything is body colored) with the hood scoop. Also, locking rear diff and the shift on the fly manual lever as well as the manual transmission! Hmm...it would seem to me that the perfect 5th Gen would basically a 2002 4Runner Limited with the 2000 SR5 V6 4WD 5spd powertrain with locking rear diff. Hmm...wonder how hard it would be for me to 'make' that.

:worthless

someone artistic please draw what dark runner's description was because it sounds good and i want to see it!!!!!!!!!

1. Get rid of the squared off wheel openings.
2. NO THIRD ROW seating.
3. More head room.
4. Keep the rear window rolling down.
5. More ways to customize your rig - colors, wheel & tires, options.

but, most importantly

Give it a manual transmission option.

If I could really have it my way, make a two-door body style also (now that would be a dream come true!!)

Matt

1.keep 4th gen looks
2 get rid of cheapo plastic body
3.full time 4wd on all models (it is called a 4runner)
4.more colors
5.i do like the 2door fourleggedrunner but also make an access cab option like the trucks
6.TRD PACKAGE!!!!!! with BFG AT and NOT rugged trails.
7.the compass and stuff like the fj
8.more ground clearance
9.33in.tires fit standard!!!
10.lockers
11.make a tougher body
12.offer factory rock sliders and underbody full skid plates
13.more 4x4 features(trails package was a good start)
14.make the hood scoops actually vent the engine!!
15.side mirrors like the fj with the off road lights

1. Quit gaining size. Keep it the same as the current model's dimensions.
2. Offer class-leading fuel efficiency in both a V6 and V8. Maybe come out with a hydrogen combustion engine option down the road.
3. Make this generation even more capable off-road than all previous models by adding several new off-road features; front and rear lockers, 33" tires, 12" ground clearance, ect...
4. Have 16, 17 and 18 inch wheels available...no 20's as they don't suit the 4Runner image.
5. Have each model...SR5, Sport/Trail Edition and Limited available with the same off-road options. For example, if someone wants a fully loaded Limited with navigation, leather, wood ect...make it available with the same die-hard off-road options as the lessor models.
6. LED projector headlights/taillights
7. Factory accessory winch option
8. NO third row seat!
9. Create a body that is more rugged/capable looking than current model.
10. Dont skimp on the quality of interior materials like in the current Tundra/Sequioa and other Toyotas of today.
11. Power folding mirrors

FINALLY! I CAN REGISTER! It took me at least 3 months because of that "the admin has specified blah blah" (yes I read that you can only register on weekdays between time x and time x)

Back to the topic
Ergonomics
Id keep the 4th gen size or something a little bit bigger than the 3rd gen. Ditch the 3rd row and make the second row reclinable. Id like the water resistant fabric all around.

Projector headlamps
High output v6/v8 ( I love the idea of the upcoming dual vvti v6/4.7V8)
Manual 6 speed tranny
Both FRONT and rear lockers (ill pass on atrac/krawl etc.)
16-17inch rims
Shift on the fly 4wd with the option of using 4wd on the streets with the limited slip torsen diff
vsc for daily duties with the ability to shut it completely off

-Standard rear locker
-More ground clearance
-Better interior materials
-Get rid of the big 18''-20'' rims
-Give better tire options
-Optional xenon lights
-Power folding side mirrors
-Make heated mirrors standard on SR5
-Swipe function on windshield wiper switch
-More interior color options
-Dual exhaust and supercharger
-Better interior lighting
As for the following options, they are wishful thinking on my part:
-Auto-dimming side mirrors
-Rain sensing wipers
-Ventilated seats
-Park sensors
-Tilt down side mirrors for backing up

My 2010 4 runner:

*Part time 4x4
*Strong V6 with 6 spd tranny getting 18/24 w/ cylinder deactivation system
*Diesel option w/ straight drive
*Roll down rear window
*A/T tire option from factory
*Round, unobtrusive wheel wells
*NO 3rd row - completely pointless in this vehicle
*Front bumper that doesn't jut out so much - more in line vertically with grill
*More upright seating position with increased head room.
*No more 'Gameboy' a/c controls. Simple 3 dial set up works perfectly fine
*Keep the premium stereo with built in sub and amp
*no trapezoid side rear window - never looked right to me
*Spoiler rocks - keep it
*Keep the base price in the $25-26k range.
*CONTINUED FOCUS ON RELIABILITY!!!!!! It's the main reason I purchased current vehicle.
*And last but not least - Show a dizzamn photo of it a few months before release!!! :yesyes:

Have the Effen buttons for the power windows and door locks light up at night, you know like a base model Hyundai or Kia fer gawd sakes....:soapbox:

1. Make it a tad bigger
2. More towing capacity
3. Keep V8 but add six speed
4. Make all models Part Time 4x4 with center & rear locker
5. New Colors
6. More offroad features like Crawl Controll/KDSS/Multi terrain Assist
7. Larger Tires/no wheels over 18"

Here's my '10 wish list:
*TRD off road package available with every trim level
*light all the switches!!!
*manual 4x4 lever
*manual tranny option
*rear locker option, maybe include it with above TRD package
*real A/T tire options, no standard
*factory remote start with confirmation on the key fob
*HID headlights
*all lights LED
*less plastic
*reliabillity,reliabillity,reliabillity!!!
*standard heated mirrors across the board
*better sound system
*keep it simple and we will keep buying!

1) DIESEL DIESEL ARE YOU LISTENING YET TOYOTA DIESEL

2) manual transmission option

3) more aggressive/better quality tires. NO 20" blingtastic rims

4) locking rear diff at least

5) keep roll down rear window

6) kill the auto-on air recirculate feature on climate control

7) HOW ABOUT SOME FREAKING LIGHTED WINDOW/LOCK SWITCHES??? For a vehicle that hovers around 36k-38k? Toyota should have to retrofit everyone with a 4th gen with lighted switches for that penny pinching move :upset:

8) Keep high tow capacity

9) I like the looks of the 4th gen and the size is right on

10) If Jeep can do the dial-up terrain responsiveness system (like land rover) in the new Grand Cherokee Toyota should step up its game and do the same
