Cruise control - 1998 4Runner

I can turn my cruise on where you can see the light, but when I try to set it, nothing happens. I've tried it in 4WD, 2WD, in overdrive, not in overdrive, unplugged and plugged in the cruise harness under the hood. Any ideas?? I don't have an owner's manual, but would love one if anyone's got a spare...would pay a reasonable price.

Once the cruise control light is on, the cruise control is activated but not set. To set the cruise control, accelerate to your desired speed and push the lever to "set accel" and it should be set. If you have to hit the brakes it will cancel the cruise control, but push the lever to "resume accel" to put you back up to speed. Pushing the lever towards "cancel" will do the same as hitting the brakes but with a less dramatic reduction in speed. Also, IIRC you have to be going over 25 mph to use cruise control. Hope this clears up some questions

Thanks for the answer. I've done that, but it just doesn't set the speed. Are there some hidden fuses somewhere that need to be changed? I can't find any that say "cruise" on the fuse boxes.

Manual or auto? If you have a manual there is a switch tied into the clutch pedal that deactivates cruise if you push the clutch. Happened on my 00, when the dealer replaced my squeeky pedal they broke that switch. The light would come on but it would not set cruise until the switch was replaced. If an auto and assuming you are not trying to set it below 40mph I can't really say except searching out fuses seems like a good place to start.

It's a manual. That may very well be the problem. I'll check it out. Thanks!!
