cruise control cuts out going up steep hills

I just purchased a 2000 4runner and when I go up steep hills the cruise control cuts out. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas ?

yes it does so it keep from lugging, i assume you have a 5spd...

no I have an auto and I was pulling a trailer so that might be the problem.

wow didnt realize he put a 5 speed in there. its 3 speeds and an overdrive gear

yes it is your problem... even if you have a loaded 4runner with 4 people and all their gear in it the cruise will cut out, its ment for freeway, not pulling loads up hills... use the skinny pedal on the right, it tends to work pretty well for me...

I just had an aftermarket cruise control installed, and on our recent trip to Montana, the cruise would cut out up the big hills, which was annoying. Still much better than having no cruise control though. Never an issue around home, as we have no hills to speak of.
