Cruise control- intermittent green light. No longer functions

Here's a new one I haven't seen or been able to find any info on:

'97 SR5 4X4 5MT
Everything was working fine up until yesterday.

Symptoms:
When trying to turn the cruise on, the green "cruise" light comes on only briefly and then goes out and does not allow me to set/accel/deccel

I don't think it's the clutch/brake switch as the light on the dash should still come on even if the clutch/brake is pressed (and it was working fine yesterday morning with no changes to the car)

I don't think it's a fuse because the light "tries" to come on.

Is it possible it's something so simple as a failing bulb? Is the bulb critical to the circuit?

Has anyone seen anything like this before?

This just happened yesterday so haven't had time. Will see if I can get some codes tonight! (although not holding my breath)

If it was a failing bulb, the unit would still work, just the bulb would go out.

The cruise light would still go "on" if it was the NSS, it just wouldn't engage the cruise control.

My thought is you have a bad switch in the steering wheel. Sounds like it's making contact as you push the plunger then losing it as it sets in the "on" position.

Update. It appears that the light doesn't come on and go out... it blinks at 3s intervals. My truck is trying to tell me something. But what?

I don't see anything regarding flashing in the factory wiring manual. Cruise needs power from dome fuse, ECU-IG fuse, gauge fuse, and also stop fuse. Starting there would be best. The cruise button, set, cancel, and coast do not send 12v to the cruise ecu. Instead, power seems to be sent from the ecu through resistors on the switch and to ground. The ecu watches either current or resistance and does whatever it does. I'll try to upload a pic of the schematic later.

There are a few threads on this but it seems more common on manuals so there's not many. Usually it's the switch on the brake pedal. Tapping the brake pedal sideways with your foot should engage the cruise control as a temp fix. On mine it was the ECU which is the other most common failure. I picked up a used one from E-Bay for $30 & it's been fine since early 2014. I'm pretty sure you have to pull the stereo to get to it. It's down low behind the ashtray.

Make sure your clutch pedal arm returns far enough to hit the button at full return. Same concept at the brake pedal but making sure the clutch is engaged to keep cruise on.

Are all of your exterior lights working? I had the same problem a while ago and it turned out to be the brake light fuse in the box under the steering wheel. I replaced that fuse and the cruise worked again.

I had an issue with mine where the "Cruise control" light would come on, but wouldn't actually "Cruise".

What it turns out it is, for me anyway, is the sensor at the clutch (manual car) wasn't fully activating.

Check the sensors.

Clutch and brake switches were fine- as mentioned above that shouldn't prevent the "cruise" light from coming on, just prevent setting it.

The culprit was an easy one- turns out I had blown the "stop" fuse under the hood. Lucky I use the cruise fairly often or who knows how long I'd have been driving around with no brake lights! :O

I've been using my trailer a lot lately, there must be a short somewhere in the wiring harness that I'll have to find.

That was it! My fuse is under the hood though. Must be model year differences.

Last week I launched and retrieved my boat without unhooking the trailer lights. I've done that before.

After retrieving the boat for the first 20 miles my cruise would not work.
It would turn on but not engage.

Eventually it worked fine.

I suspect the water caused a mild short and when it evaporated the cruise started working.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, My cruse has been out for a couple of months. Turns out it was fuse n #30 in the fuse box next to the drivers knee. Manual says stop light, no mention of cruise.
