Cruise Control

Hey everyone, new to site and to Toyota. Just bought the 04 4 Runner and not sure why it took me this long!!!

Don't know if it is only my cruise or everyones, but the issue is everytime I stop the cruise and slow down I have to reset. Is this standard and if it is, is there a way to change it? I am in and out of Chicago all the time which means many tolls and am getting sick of resetting after every toll!

First off, welcome to the board!

As far as I know, as long as you haven't come to a complete stop, you should be able to just resume your set speed. I will mess around with mine when I leave for a meeting and seeing if it has to be reset if I go below a certain speed. I'll let you know.

That sounds like correct behavior for the toyota cruise control. From what I remember from my Solara, whenever you press the brake it turns off the cruise control and must be reset.

I played around with it a bit, especially at the tolls in NY and NJ, and found if you start it even after a roll stop, if it's way below the speed it's set for, it slams on the gas. Personally I did not care for that, so what I do is bring it up to the speed or close to it that it's set for, then re-activate it.

As far as the resetting issue, all I have to do is turn the knob to the resume position, and it goes back to my original settings. But if you turn it off completely, then off course the speed previously entered will be cleared.

if i remember correctly, the system will clear the preset speed setting if the speed at anytime drops below 20mph or 25mph. if you resume above the cutoff the system will downshift madly to get you back up to preset speed. i usually get to withing 5mph and hit resume as to avoid the issue of the CC to downshift to get back to the preset speed.

i dont know if toyota changed the cutoff mph that would clear the preset speed, im just going by what my older toyota's did.

ok i went out and got the 04 owner's manual and here is a direct quote:

the cruise control allows you to cruise the vehicle at a desired speed over 40km/h or 25mph even with your foot off the accelerator pedal.

cancelling the preset speed:

a. pulling the lever in the "Cancel" direction and releasing it
b. depressing the brake pedal

if the vehicle speed falls below about 40km/h or 25mph, the preset speed will automatically cancel out.

if the vehicle speed drops 16km/h or 10mph below the preset speed, the preset speed will also automatically cancel out.

resuming the preset speed:

if the preset speed is cancelled by pulling the control lever or by depressing the brake pedal, pushing the lever up in the "+ RES" direction will restore the speed set prior to cancellation.

however, once the vehicle speed falls below about 40km/h or 25mph, the preset speed will not be resumed.

note:
each tap of the "-/+ SET" lever changes the set speed by 1.6km/h or 1mph.

not mention in the owner's manual but you can also cancel the system by putting the transmission into neutral or (not tested) applying the e-brake.
