Backed my 03 4Runner into a brick wall at an angle, hit the bumper on the right side, low. The silver color rubbed off and it looks really ugly. And the part that wraps aroung the side poped out. But this isn't the real problem. When the bumper failed it wiped out the tail light assembly as it bowed up. So the bumber not only does not protect things very well it destroyed the tail light way above where I hit the wall. Now that I look at it , it looks like the bumper is not able to protect anything, especially itself. And you better not touch it against anything or it will cave in. What a piece of junk.

I was just barley moving and was not really sure I hit something, it was just a bump. Besides worthless the bumper took out the taillight assembly that was not touched by the wall. The message here is don't touch your bumpers to anything, it's expensive. Does anyone know of bumper protectors available for a 4Runner. This wall was below my line of site and I'm paying the price for being stupid, but I think I'm now in the market for a bumper to protect the bumpers and lights. The design of the 4Runner bumpers is a joke.
Thanks for the link. I'm going to start looking. On the rear bumper, it looks like the corners of the original 4Runner bumper are still exposed, that's where I lost my tail light, when the bumper failed it took out the tail light above. My goal is to keep anything from hitting the bumpers, front and rear, they are just not up to being touched.
Ok wise guy, we all know that not hitting stuff is best, but I made a mistake, these things are called accidents. I'm now looking for a bumper to protect the bumper and lights. I don't like the idea of having an expensive light assembly for a bumper, incase I make a mistake in the future.

You could try hanging old tires along the back and front like an ol' tug boat.:arrow:
You could even put them along the side and forget about door dings forever.
Maybe you need foam bumpers?
How about silicone tail light lenses?

About a month ago I had an idiot in a Grand Cherokee back into my runner at about 15 mph. I saw the whole thing and wanted to "pound" the idiot. When I saw the minor scratches on the runner ($250 damage) and trashed Cherokee I thought, "tough truck". Repainted the bumper and a week later someone gave the runner a kiss with their bumper. A little elbow greese to get the paint off and good as new. I'm amazed. Sorry you didn't fare as well.
To be fair, IIHS does test how well bumpers stand up to low speed impacts and the 4Runner does not do well on this one test (although it excels in the more important crash tests)

Larry, I got one of the WAAG rear bumper guards when I bought the front one (Front Runner). I think it would do the job for you, though it might get bent in the process. Was about $200, IIRC.
