CS144 Upgrade problems

its not an alt issue. its either a band ground or power wire or a bad battery. try checking the battery terminals and loosening them up and cleaning them, then rehooking them back up.

It's not a problem with the upgrade, as the great him said. Unless you got a bad alternator.

HOWEVER, if you charged the battery all night it should still start.

Yeah...I know it's not because of the upgrade...I figured I messed something up during the process.

The first time I stared it...sparks. I rearranged my alt ground wire so the (not so well) bent tabs faced away from case.

I had to be somewhere so I recharged the battery again and when I got back, tightened up my connections.

Started right up:)

My battery connections need to be replaced because I hate them.

Any other suggestions? I hate the old school soft metal ones...what is that? Lead?

I like the marine ones. Then you just use wing nuts to connect the wires to the battery. It makes it so much easier if you're like me and always working on something . I'll see if I can find a pic.

Here you go. Love them.

Intermittent no start after alternator upgrade

97 4runner limited
Followed Doc's write-up, real easy. Doc's CS144 alternator upgrade.

I just finished upgrading to an alternator from a 94 cadillac deville with heated windshield. Everything looked good, started it up and checked the voltage at the battery, 14.7 at the battery. The next day I went out and it started up, ran a couple errands and then at the third stop I turned the key and click, dash isnt as bright as it usually is, tried again and same click. when i checked the battery the positive post had a dark gray look to it, (i had cleaned both posts the day before) and the negative looked clean. I took the connector off and it was the same color inside the connector and the post so I cleaned it and reconnected, started up fine. Next day same thing after a few errands. Next day I changed out the battery connectors with new ones, cleaned everything, connected them and sprayed battery protectant over both posts. Next day same thing after two stops. The battery shows 12.9 every time. This last time it didn't look like there was anything on the posts but i took the positive off, cleaned it and reattached. started up fine.

Any ideas? Thank you.

To me it sounds like your battery is gassing out of the positive post seal. I’m guessing you have a sealed battery and not one with the covers to access the cells to check the water level.

Nothing really to add to this post other than I also did this upgrade but ended up going back to the stock alternator. I think I replaced the CS144 alternator twice maybe three times and the battery 3 times because the alternator killed it. The last straw was when I was driving to work early in the morning and the alternator just altogether stopped working and charging my battery. Luckily I was able to limp and exit to the emergency lane. I had my car towed to my old mechanic and had him replace it w/ the stock alternator and I haven't had a problem since.

I’ve seen many people, on here and on the 3rd Gen Facebook pages I’m on, complaining about the CS144.

Where the hell are you buying your alternators at?!?

I’ve had mine since install (see post), and haven’t had a single issue.

Can’t remember where my old mechanic got it, but it was definitely one of his vendors.

Idle speculation is the cheep “adaptor” used to go from Toyota to the GM without splicing into the harness is causing issues. 14.7v never killed any of my batteries with GM alternators. They like running 14-14.7v depend on temps.

15.2v blew a headlight or two in my Cummins on really cold mornings charging the batteries after a hard winter start.

I’m not use to seeing 13.5-13.8 in the summer monitoring the 4Runners voltage I still like seeing 14-14.2.
