I suppose I should start one.

Let us begin with a back story. I bought a 2010 Tundra Rock Warrior (AWESOME TRUCK) new in November of 09. My wife got pregnant a month later and we had a beautiful baby girl (our first) on the 12th of September. I decided that even with only 5k miles on the Tundra, it wasn't the proper vehicle for a family so I traded it for this 03 4R SR5 V8 with 108k miles on 9/23. It took 3 days to stumble across this site and T120, YT, others. It took 2 days after that before I decided a build was in need. So on 10/12 I decided I had done enough research (thank you guys), I ordered a set of wheels and tires from Discount Tire Direct, and Bilstein 5100s, OMEs, Brake Lines, etc. from Wheeler's Off-road (great company).

This is the beginning of what is sure to be a very expensive hobby.

Build info...

The lift went on Wednesday the 20th.

Took about 7hrs, start to finish. Did it the "No Compressor Needed" Way, with a bit of an exception.

Parts:
Bilstein 5100 Adjustable Front shocks, Part # BE5-C475-H0
Bilstein 5100 Rear Shocks, Part # BE5-E703-H0
Old Man Emu Coils, 885/895

The process went as follows: (I wasn’t good about taking pictures, but will take some stuff down and take pictures to add soon)

1. Jack the truck on all corners, hit all bolts and nuts with penetrating oil.

Note: I took off all the lug nuts and tried to remove the OEM wheels and tires. I say "tried" for a reason. I really should have just taken it as a sign of things to come and left it be, but of course I proceeded down the course of PITA. I kick, smacked, punched, even got a 5lb dead blow out to get the wheels to let go of the hub, but NO! they simply would not let go. I finally had to wedge a scissor jack behind the wheel between the Arms and the wheel and crank, to push it off. Seeing as I may have some trouble from here out, I Kroiled all bolts/nuts that needed removed, including the skid plate bolts. Grabbed a beer. Picked out the music I was going to listen too. Kroiled the bolts/nuts again, then

a. Began with my fluid changes.

Started off by breaking 3 skid plate bolts and rounding off another bolt head (A good indication of how the project was going to go). Drained the oil (someone had torqued the drain plug to 50+ lbs) and tranny fluid (not as tight). TRIED to take off the oil filter. I had a socket tool for my 3/8"s socket that fits perfectly, except someone torqued the filter to about 90 lbs and it just stripped inside where the socked extension attached. Grabbed a set of chain vice grips and it punctured a hole in the filter, giving my hands, arms and other tools a good unnecessary coating of oil. FINALLY got the filter off and LIGHTLY tightened the new one on. At this point in time I had forgotten to change my differential fluids. I added the fluids as necessary, Kroiled the bolts/nuts again and moved on.

Now the build begins

4. Remove sway bar links. 6mm allen for the bolt shaft, 17mm wrench for the nuts.

Note: I started on the driver’s side; Keep in mind, I Kroiled all the bolts 4 times in the hour before hand. This is a bit of a pain to do anyway between the 6mm Allen wrench for the bolt shaft and the 17mm wrench (with a breaker bar). Passenger side however was a JOKE. Got the nut off, but the link shaft wouldn't release. Put the nut on and beat it a bit, well, I beat it a lot. Stripped the threads off the bolt, so much for that. Went to work on the lower linkage and got it off. It was then that I decided just to pull the sway bar all together and cut off the sway bat link at the upper joint. (It’s still there, it’s not going anywhere!) Then removed the sway bar bushing housings, well, I tried. I had to cut off one bolt that rounded off ½ way out. Anyone want a sway bar?

5. Remove the nuts, washers, and bushings atop each shock. A pair of needle-nose vice-grips and a 17mm ratcheting wrench makes quick work of the fronts, while the same wrench and a strap wrench (for the shock housing) will handle the rear.

6. Break lose the lower shock bolts, cake with a ½” drive ¾” socket and wrench. Remove the nut and washer and set aside.

7. Now prop the hub assembly (a 2x4 or 4x4 block will do the trick) and break lose (only loosen them) the lower A-Arm bolts connecting it to the hub (3/4” wrench/socket). They’ll take some muscle. Using a jack, lift the A-Arm so that you see the shock/coil compress a bit. Remove the A-Arm bolts, set aside.

8. Now lower the jack slowly, allowing the shock and coil to decompress slowly. Once done, remove the jack. Using a follower pin (or HD Punch) punch the lower shock bolt out.

9. Using a crowbar or other HD pry-bar, pry the A-Arm down (good place to pry is at the ball joint (you can put 230lbs on it, trust me). As you pry down, wiggle and finagle the shock/coil assembly from its resting place and remove.

Now reverse the process…

10. Assemble the new coil/shock (if you’re using Bilstein 5100s as I did, put the adjustment on the lowest setting, 0” lift, as your lift will be coming from the coil itself). DON’T FORGET THE PROPER ASSEMBLY, as I did. I forgot the top washer that engages the shock rod lip, keeping it from coming all the way through the tower. While prying the A-Arm down again (it’ll take some weight), work the assembly back up to it’s normal position. As you slowly release your weight from the pry-bar, work the shock rod up through the tower (it may not go all the way though until you begin compressing the assembly).

Note: here is where I had some problems. The lower shock eye fits into a bit of a “housing” where you can rest it on a “lip”. No matter how hard I worked, I could not get it up to the point where the bolt goes through. I brought out a ratchet strap and ran a hook through the A-Arm and hooked the shock shaft just above the eye and ran the ratcheting end to a frame point directly across the truck. Giving it a few hard ratchets, and prying down a bit on the A-Arm and UP a bit with another smaller pry-bar on the exterior of the shock eye, it allowed me to get the shock bolt through the eye without need of hammering or worry for damaging the threads of the bolt. Once the bolt was in, I released the strap.

11. Now, re-position your jack under the A-Arm. Slowly begin compressing the shock/coil while guiding the shock rod through the shock tower. Once you begin to see the truck lift up, stop, it’s compressed enough. Add some red loctite to your A-Arm bolts and re-attach the A-Arm to the Hub. You may need to lay down under the hub, pulling it down a bit to meet the A-Arm. Torque them to specified settings (166lbs?)

12. Put the bushing, washer and nut on the top of the shock rod and tighten, remember the vice-grips and ratcheting wrench? The Bilsteins will require a ¾” wrench instead of the 17mm the factory nuts needed.

Do the other side and the front is DONE after you reinstall the skidplates, unless you want that sway bar re-attached.

Moving to the rear:

I only had ONE problem with the rear end, and it was a big one. The shocks seem to be at strange angles and the eyes “kink” a bit with the spindle that they mount on.

1. Using a 17mm ratcheting wrench and a strap wrench to hold the shock body, remove the top shock nuts and hardware, set aside.

2. Using the 17mm wrench/socket, remove the lower bolt holding the eye on the spindle.

Note: here was my problem. No matter how hard I pried, pounded, or prayed, the eye would not release from the spindle. I oiled the crap out of it and nothing. I finally got the cutoff wheel out, cut through the first metal ring on each side and removed the majority of the shock. What’s left was the rubber bushing and the inside metal sleeve that contacts the spindle directly. I removed all the rubber and began heating the metal sleeve. No dice. To remove it, I had to carefully cut the sleeve down to the spindle, heat it and hit it with Kroil, then with a giant pair of vice grips and a gorilla to clamp the vice grips down, I finally go the sleeve to turn and come off.

3. The other side was a piece of cake. Climb underneath the car and using a spring compressor (GASP!) compress each spring just a bit to help in their removal.

4. Using the spring compressor (GASP!), compress the new springs to get them in, as they really need some help going in.

5. Mount the new shocks and you’re done.

Overall I'd rate the install with the problems I had as a 6/10 difficulty.
 
I love your wheels, and the truck looks great overall.

Definately need more pics from better angles and lighting.
 
What made you decide to mix the 5100 Billies with the OME springs? How do you like the ride?

I've had great luck with 5100s in the past + the entire lift cost me $100+ less than the OME setup.

It rides better than it did when I bought it, and the control offroad has been fantastic.
 
Today's install:

Infinity 10" Basslink Subwoofer. It's a self powered 10" active woofer with an inactive, oppositely mounted woofer.

2hrs start to finish. Difficulty: 1 of 5 stars. Great sound.

Note: If using the line level inputs, you don't need a 12V remote power wire to the amp to power it on when you start the vehicle. It senses a signal in the speaker wire and powers on automatically. Great feature.

Start off by getting the trim pieces out of the way first. Pull off the thresholds on the front and rear of the driver's side and the rear passenger side. Then unbolt the lower seatbelt bolts on both sides, allowing you to remove the pillar trim.

Next will involve crimping the proper connections to your inline fuse holder. Mine came with 3-4" lengths of wire on either side of the fuse. One one end I crimped a butt-splice to later link up with the wire that went back through the firewall and into the cab, the other end got the proper sized ring Terminal. I also used liquid electrical tape, as it's a wet environment.

Grab a wire coat hangar and cut it to open it up. Punch one side through the boot in the firewall (careful not to jab the other wires in the factory harness). Tape one end of your power wire to the coat hangar and pull it through. This will be a necessary trick to cleanly run different wires in the trim.

Pull trough the amout of wire needed and crimp the other end to your fuse holder. More liquid tape. Run the power wire with the factory harness all the way back to the back seat. You can unbolt the anchors behind the back seat to allow you to pull pull that peice of trim up so you can run the wires under for a clean look.

Next: run the line level input wires from the amp to the front (imperative as the wires have a connection terminal on one end already. Run the proper wires to the pillars where you removed the trim and cut them to the proper length.

Splice into the factory speaker wiring (Red/White on the passenger side, Black/Yellow on the Driver's side. They're also a heavier gauge than the rest of the wires in that harness. Splicing is a simple job with a steady hand. Use an exacto to cut the insulation and split the wires inside. Insert the new wires into that split and wrap them around a bit. Solder the bit together to form a solid connection. Liquid tape will assure they don't contact the other wires. There are also inputs from the front, but as there is a ton of wiring in the front panels, I wired these in with the the rears.

Ground wire for me is simply a 10ga to the one of my achor bolts in the cargo area.

Next, run the supplied "phone line" from the amp to a place where you wish to mount the remote gain control.

Replace all the trim.

I utilized the cargo deck to mount the sub on, my wires come up from below to make a clean appearace. Attach all the wires, don't forget the battery end of the power wire. Fire it up.

Looks great! I'm thinking about getting the baselink myself, one question though, it looks like there are 4 wires that run to the speakers correct? Where did you splice those in at? At the speakers themselves or at the harness on the back of the headhunit?
 
I didn't get any pics of that part of the install.

I pulled the trim on the B pillar and spliced in there, although there is enough wire to go wherever.

I'll try to get pics soon.
 
Good looking rig! What made you decide to keep the 5100's at the stock setting versus boosting them up? Keep it somewhat low for the family :)?
