wondering if a cummins engine out of a dodge truck would fit in the 3rd gen 4runner. looked all over and cant find any info on this, anyone know?

I wish you luck, but considering your asking, you probably dont have the skills, and it would be the 4bt out of the Frito trucks, not the 5.9/6.7l out of the dodge's.

Not as big of a ***** as you would think, the 4bt is a mechanical motor, so no ECU, it greatly reduces wiring, but none the less, the swap would still be a *****.

As stated, the I6 is way too long for the engine bay of a 4R, there's a guy in Calgary that shoehorned one into an 80 series though. The 4BT would be a much better fit, but they are really deep and would require a big lift, and possibly custom cross member to fit, but only 4 wires I believe to make them run.

this is sick, i would love to see a cummins in one of these, but to actually make it fit, and for the power to be useable, good luck. How would the rest of the drive line hold up? axles, rear diff?

it would be a lot of money 5-6g at least be cheaper just to buy another diesel truck

i have a 3rd gen and am in the middle of going through school to be a master diesel tech. Most of the replies to this thread are right. It will be a complicated conversion, especially if you don't know what youre doing and have no skills in it. I work with diesels everyday and am going to swap a 4bt turbo into my 3rd gen with a bigger lift and complete custom subframe. This will take time seeing that I work, go to school, and am raising my family, but when I start I will post a build thread so anybody interested can look. I'll prob end up doing the front and rear end out of a ford or chevy and most likely a bigger transmission from a ford/chevy with an adapter plate to bolt right up. I've done lots of research on the engine, the capabilities, the specs, etc. The information is out there if you're really interested, but it'll be a job for sure. Make sure you know what you're doing before you get into something like that. The 4bt will be about the only cummins you can put into your 4runner without doing lots of fabrication and having to move stuff around, But the 4bt is no joke. You can make those motors into a power house. The 4bt cummins turbo engine has more torque than a big block chevy.

It sounds cool but wouldn't be worth it in the end unless you just wanted something unique ...and money and time was no object. Someone with fabrication skills could pull it off but then you'd have the tranny and all the electronics around it. Even the 4bt isn't light, it may have the torque of a big block but it has the weight of it too. One popular swap for the Jeep guys is a little Isuzu diesel that pops up on ebay every now and then. Small package and less weight. Cummins does have some smaller engines that would be a better fit but they are pricey...I've been with Cummins for 17 years now so I know a thing or two about them. I was lucky enough to see a Toyota Hilux come in to our plant one day from China with a "smaller" Cummins engine in it...pretty cool!
