Current full length roof racks?

with Whitson full length racks essentially out of the picture for a while, what are the other options still available? can we get a quick list going for whats available now?

The only two "true" full length racks are Gobi and Bajarack, obviously you can add extensions to Yakima racks etc. to make them close to full length as well.

There's the equipt K9 racks. I think they're kind of spendy as well... And I can't remember the name, but I thought there was one that had horizontal slats instead of vertical like the K9... maybe somebody else can chime in for that

I'll have half racks, and full racks out within a month. I'm going to be making the ones this weekend, putting them in Solid Works in a week or, and then the cutter. Hopefully I have some ready by mid August.

Dunno yet. I'll need to get metal prices, cutter prices, hardware prices, and so on. Guessing, I couldn't see them being more than $700 for a full length. That's a complete guess, and it could be cheaper. Not to mention these will be able to fit in a small square box. Assembly will be required too. This should leave some to the imagination.

Plate sides with either round or square tube cross bars. More of a shallow basket rather than platform. I can custom make something as well for your needs if my design doesn't work. I'd just need the dimension of the RTT.

If there's a market for a platform I could come out with those as well.

An affordable, simple platform that is designed for rooflines is what I have been hoping for. Flat racks have so much more utility in my mind.

The sides on mine will follow the roof lines. The basket or platform will be completely level though. You'll be able to set something completely flat on top, and it'll sit evenly across the cross bars. It'll mount to the factory rails, but at the same time cover the rails so they're out of side. I'll most likely go with square tubing over round tubing. I might make a faring for the front, or have an option for a light bar and mounts. Lots to figure out still.

I might have an idea that'll let me combine a basket and platform style both into one rack. Of course this will only work on full length racks. Half racks will most likely still be basket style.

I'm going to try to work on this when I get my 4runner back from the shop. Which will hopefully be next week.

Question for the two of you. Which would you rather have?

1. Mounting to the factory channels
2. Mounting directly to the roof (this would require removal if all factory components, and drilling holes in your roof, you'd have to install rivet nuts in the roof, installation tool would be provided, you can seal everything up with RTV)

I like the idea of replacing the factory channels, but the drilling scares me a bit. I would assume you would reuse the factory mounting points, and add new ones towards the front?

There would be 3 mounting points. All of which would under the existing channel. That would be holes total that would need to be drilled. I don't care much for that idea. The other option would have you mounting it to the factory channels.

Factory channels! I'd never drill into my roof for a roof rack unless absolutely necessary. I think a lot of people would just go with a whitson or another in channel if you when with drill into the roof version. But hey, it wouldn't be too hard to have both options you know?

Have you considered building your own?

Just a little, im not currently in a place where I can tinker with welding and tube bending. I do have a little miller mig back in california but im in colorado for the summer. maybe ill investigate the idea later this year if no other options come up.

Anyone in the Denver area have experience a the tool to build a full size rack? :biggrin1:


Im looking to move my light bar to the front of a rack and maybe upgrade to a 100w solar panel and have room for extra storage up top when i need the room.

Never really though of it that way. With mine you would be able to do both with the same rack. Just a matter of a little extra hardware.

At this point I have all the pieces lined up. I just need to make the sides.
