Currently swapping differential fluids

Hey all, I'm in the middle of changing the oil in my differentials and transfer case.

Unfortunately, the fluid transfer pump I got is too big for the oil containers (those longer, narrow gear oil ones).

I've got a regular, empty 5w-30 container that I used to catch the runoff from the filter drain last time I changed my engine oil. I've emptied it out, but it still has some residue in there.

Think it's safe to pour the gear oil in the 5w-30 container, and then use the transfer pump to get it from there into the differentials/transfer case?

Need fast opinions!

Perfectly fine. Don't sweat it.

You could also pour a little gear oil in it and swish it around and then dump it before using it.

Well I just finished everything. The fluid transfer pump had a clear hose, so I kept an eye on what was coming through. It looked good.

Definitely glad I got the fill plug on the rear diff open before draining it. S.O.B. that thing was on there tight!

The only thing that I messed up was that I didn't put the new gasket washer on the front diff drain plug. I'll keep an eye on it, but I don't have a clean oil pan to drain it into in order to take it off and put a fresh gasket on.

Everything else went pretty smoothly. The front and rear fluids looked used, but not terrible. The transfer case was easily in the best shape of the three. The rear diff was solid black, but not too many filings on the drain magnet.

What year and how many miles? Any towing? Just curious.

What year and how many miles? Any towing? Just curious.

06, 64,450 miles, I bought it at about 43k miles and have not done any towing since. It's Colorado, so I use the 4wd in the winter, and I just started doing a bit of off-roading (but I've only been twice).
