Custom DMV Plates Question

Hello all. Ok I'm hoping that you're reading this because you've purchased custom plates from the DMV. I'm from N. Cali. and I ordered my custom "Lake Tahoe" plates about 2 weeks after I bought my T4R, so say around 1/10/08. Today in the mail, I got plates, but they are NOT my custom ones. Those of you who've done this before, can I take them back to the DMV and tell them I'm waiting for my custom plates? Do I just leave them in the envelope and wait for what I'm guessing is a letter from the DMV stating my plates are in?

FYI: This is what the DMV website says, so I think what I'm asking is other custom "personalized" plate buyers what their experience was and what I should do with these plates that I don't want. I don't plan on putting them on...I can tell you that much.

DMV: Personalized plates will be available about 8-12 weeks after they are ordered online or the completed Special Interest License Plate Application is received by DMV. You will be notified by mail when your personalized plates are ready for pick up.

just keep it and put onto the car for now, i know it takes so long to get the custom plate. i ordered mine around the same time and still waiting for them.

when you receive the new plate arrival letter from dmv, you will have to setup an appointment at the office to swap plate, then you bring your 2 existing plates and current registration, they will give you your custom one with new stickers and new registration.

When I got HAM radio plates in Delaware they issued normal plates which were the official plates AND my callsign plates. You had to keep the original normal plates somewhere in the car. Been a while since I've been in CA so not sure how it works out there...Awaiting my plates for OH so I can swap my HAM plates off the Pilot to the 4Runner.. *twiddle*

Hi , if you recieved the wrong ones return them as soon as possible , when your pesonal plates are ready they will contact you buy mail to let you know your plates are ready for pick up.

Personalized Plates

Ruffian: I have had several different California personalized plates over the years (starting in 1980) and never had to wait longer than 8 weeks to get new ones or the registration for transferred plates. It has taken longer in the past few years than in the begining, but then there are more choices and more licenses. My current ones I got in 2008 for a prior vehicle.

I would take them to the nearest DMV office and find out what is going on. I know it is a hassle, but it is the best way to get any anwser.
