Custom GPS Holder

I just bought a Garmin Nuvi and I've had this idea in my head for a while to mount it in the sunglass holder so that when u want it you just hit the tab and it drops down (kind of Jame's Bondish) I've started modding the holder on Tuesday and I get my GPS tomorrow so we'll see how it all works......Anyone else ever try this???

Good idea to hide it but it will block your inside mirror. That will take getting used to. I'm thinking you will also need the remote antenna.
 
Interesting idea, are you planing on running a power wire for charging? My Nuvi has the flip up antena so im pretty sure it wont fit. Curious to see pics though!
 
Yeah I'm gonna wire it in....and when the holder is down I still have half my rearview mirror which I can see out of and when I'm towing my trailer it doesn't even matter which is the main reason I got it. My Nuvi is just the 200W it was inexpensive and simple for what I wanted plus it doesn't have the flip up antenna, I don't know how the signal is gonna be hopefully good because I don't think my model has a hook up for the remote antenna....:confused:
 
Ok, change of plans.....instead of mounting it in the sunglass holder, I removed the holder and hard mounted it in the place of the sunglass holder......when I had it in the holder I couldn't see it very well and it did block half the mirror but now I have my whole mirror and the gps looks stock in there...I'll take + post pics tonight....

How's the signal strength with it mounted there? I wouldn't think it'd be an issue. The Nuvi models seem to have really good signal acquisition. Any problems with visibility of the unit while driving? What kind of mount did you use and how did you attach? Did you tap the sunroof for power? Do you leave the unit in there all the time or take it with you when you leave?
 
The signal strength up there is awesome, I have full bars..... The visability is awesome cause its closer to your face so looks bigger and is angled perfectly so no problems with driving....I used half the mount it came with, that holds the GPS unit and drilled it into the holder so Its detachable and ran the power line up there and plugged in down below near drivers feet area so basically all I need to do is buy another detachable mount and I can have it for the wife's car as well...but i'm pretty much gonna leave it in there all the time but you could easily take it out and throw it in the glove box so no one can steal it....

That looks pretty cool. I did a custom mount on the center channel speaker grill. But This is a another example of a great option.
 
Yeah I saw yours....that would have been my next choice...nice mod....these things are pretty cool...I didn't get the 250w becuase I'm no where near Canada so I just saved the money and got the 200W....
