Did you pull the radio out? I have a Playbook I was thinking about doing something similar with but I want to keep the radio.

I have a Nexus 7 I was thinking about doing that too. Can't wait to see the out come. Keep us posted.

I actually put this on the back burner. I ran into issues accomplishing everything I wanted (mainly a backup camera) AND with it on a practical budget. I ordered a Parrot Asteroid Smart now. The problem is that I would have to install a new stereo in a remote location for this to be practical and it was just too much money to not have a camera. Maybe if someone would make a nice Bluetooth weather proof camera already.

If you plan on hooking it up so that sound comes out through the trucks speakers, the biggest challenge you will have is the sound quality because you will be using the analog signal from the headset port on your iPad.

That would need to be connected to an amplifier in order to get enough juice to power the trucks speakers. That alone creates so much noise to come out of your speakers when its amplified from the headset port.

I wanted to do this as well, however this challenge plus having to butcher the dash (unless you can do without butchering the dash) and also have great sound quality made the whole project prohibitively expensive (I got quotes of $1500+ when you add up all the parts plus install). I was also interested in BT rear view camera and couldn't find one.

What I ended up doing was making my OEM stereo BlueTooth capable by installing this device ( GROM USB, Android Smartphone, iPod, AUX, Bluetooth Hands Free Integration to a factory car stereo - you put in your vehicle and the device will come up ) in my truck. I then got a very sturdy Nexus 7 and Galaxy Note 2 holders from Device Holders and Dashboard Vehicle Mounts*-*ProClip USA and I can use either of my devices in my car via stereo blutooth streaming. The navigation works awesome like that as well - when guidance comes on, the music fades etc all through the OEM speakers in the truck.

I'm not an audiophile so I was just planning on using Bluetooth for the audio. The issue then becomes the cost and relocating a small single din stereo into the glovebox or something to allow the iPad to rest into the dash. If the Asteroid doesn't work out like I want, I'll revisit this later.

Some people overthink this stuff. I think I posted it before and plays through the stock radio.

I think you'll get better sound from the headphone output or the line out than from bluetooth streaming. The DAC on an ipad is just as good as a CD receiver.

Each to his own and you do whatever you want to make you happy and/or meet your requirements. :)

I couldn't have a setup like that - no offense intended, so don't take this personally. That setup looks too big and it covers the HVAC controls and just looks very clumsy and unweildy.

But it does what you want it to do and you like it like that - that is what's important. In other words it's not me "overthinking this stuff". Its what I want to do which is important to me. We all have different tastes and requirements. In the end its all good - each to his own.

First of all, this is not your own idea. I saw this being done on tacoma world 5 years ago, and did it on my tacoma waay back then. Here is the youtube video shown by an Asian gentleman 5 years ago, for the very first gen ipad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3kRdYG9IXo

If you want to offer up an alternative idea, great. But give attribution where it's due and do not try to pass off other ideas as your own. Just saying.

I suspect there's a bunch of people that did the exact same thing w/o seeing it elsewhere. This method isn't anything more than common sense and ease of use.

I'm happy to give attribution but I'm not about to spend time searching to see if what I did has been done before. Just saying.
