Custom made 4th gen cargo box

Figured I would add the newest photo of the box I made. Found a license plate frame in the middle of the road with my name on it so I cleaned it up, painted it then mounted it. Also added a handle about 10 minutes ago.

Well I have been looking at making this for quite a while now but just could not figure out how I wanted it to be configured. After some thought and plenty of wood in the garage, I came up with this puppy.
Once I got going on it, the box kind of took on it's own measurements and went together fairly easy.
It is held down in 3 spots, 2 of which are shackles and the 3rd is behind the amp. I used a 3" bolt and went into the threaded hole that held the factory tiedown hook. I did place the hook back on the top of the base on the box so that I would not lose it's use.
I used 2 coats of KILZ primer on the entire box then sparyed it with 7, yes 7 cans of RUST-OLEUM MULTI COLORED TEXTURED spary paint in the AGED IRON color.
This stuff was a bear to spray, as it's mostly grit. Pretty close to 200-250 grit sand paper. It's not too rough and not too smooth either.

there is actually about 3/4" at the bottom of the face that i used to pull it out with. I would like to add a handle but can find the one that catches my eye just yet.

What's the point of this? Is a milk crate not getting it done? I don't understand the point of a single drawer file cabinet in the back, especially on the side with the short folding seat.

well if you would ever do a search before you go jumping off the deep end, especially only having a whole 2 posts. The box serves an actual purpose and cost me only 7 cans of paint. Search around 1st and you just might understand things better.

Easy there 810; I wasn't trying to get snippy with you. Firstly, you made a new thread in response to presumably, some other thread about this file drawer thing, and you didn't add the link to it. Heck, you didn't even mention the other thread! And secondly, my post count has no correlation to any opinion I might have about your DIY drawer. I asked a simple question. I think that 2 milk crates would be easier to put in and out, and smell a ton better than some drawer with 7 cans of spray paint.

i have plenty of room still. i can even get 2 of my dirt bikes in the space left. i checked when i made the box.
it just seems as though people think that if you are build a box that it has to be the same size as the seat that it is next to.

i guess today is my crap attitude day. sorry jmst4r, you just caught me at a bad time i guess. however, there are threads that clearly state the reason for these boxes. i suppose if someone really wants to pay a ton for a box then go ahead, i just like building things.

Lots of guys who offroad and camp have similar setups in the back of their truck. It is nice to be able to carry tools/recovery gear etc.in a secure area so you do not need to worry it moving around while off road.

I carry a backpack full of recovery gear, tool bag and a backpack full of camping/survival gear and it would be nice to have it all in one location rather than individual bags. I have thought about building something similar in the past.

If anyone wants to see similar ideas go to the FJ forum or 120 and you will see countless guys w/ similar mods.

that spray paint u used was my fav part. thing is sick too all the haters out there. i saw it. u see those other pics jason? some peeps set ups r crazy. im with u blairb y have three diff. bags w all you need, when build one of what 810moto(jason) has and keep that same space.

.... has me considering doing a similar design. I have a bag just for "winter survival" gear incase of a breakdown in winter, plus I have a winter shovel, jumper cables, always have an extra jug of winter wiper fluid and some other stuff all in different bags or boxes. Would be nice to have a secure box like this that hids everything (instead of open top).

thanks guys. i actaully have two boxes. 1st one is where the JBL sub would be and stands vertical. it has the jumper cables, ponchos, air pump, straps, rope, solar panel and some other misc. items in it. I also have the 4 way mounted to it with a 1st aid kit and my maglite. I am a rope and duct tape freak so most likely the vertical one will consist of just that and everything else will mover over to the new box as well as some MRE's, water packs, blankets and some tools. here's a pic of the vertical box. it's open because i was seeing how much stuff i could cram in it but it does close and lock.

I noticed it as well in the other photo's and liked the Toyota emblem, nice touch.... is that made out of wood?

I also like the idea of the flash light and 4-way (which I need to transfer back over from my trailer) mounted for easy access.

hey ridger. yes, it is made of 1/2" plywood. Having the light and 4way there saves me from having to find a home for them elsewhere. It's nice to be able to just reach in a grab what ya need in a split second. The little toyota 1st aid kit is full of batteries new in their case. I keep alot of 9v's so that I can make a fire by putting them and some really good steel wool together, thus making a short circuit and overheating the wool. All that ='s fire.
