Custom Made Cargo Drawers

Today I got fed up with all my stuff rolling around in the rear of the runner. So with some help to get the shelf out (you know who you are!), I decided to make a 2 drawer cargo unit. I am still in the process of making it and is about 50% complete. I am taking pictures along the way and will post them in a later post sometime next year!! I will also include dimensions as well.

Dude don't worry, I am taking pictures but will load them tomorrow sometime. If I did them now, the cargo drawers wouldn't get done. And I will also list the materials I used as well.

I always wondered why a real storage area isn't in this ride. 6"deep and 2' x 3'. Jumper cables and some tools.

There really should be something to store some tools in. I mean there are those little storage areas above the wheel wells in the back but the only thing you could fit in there is a pack of cigarrettes. They should make something like the ridgeline in the back that you can just open up. I would fill mine with heineken

Well after finish this project around the same time Virginia Tech won the Orange Bowl, here is the final product. If you would like more detailed pictures don't hesitate to ask. I have almost 50 and can email them or something to you guys.

The materials used were;
2 sheets of 3/4x49''x39'' MDF board. 1 1/2'' finish nails. Wood glue. 3'' handles, 9/16'' drawer lock, and Heavy duty 100lbs. capacity drawer slides.

Built basically the same setup, you need to add locks to prevent the drawers from sliding back into the rear hatch

Yeah they are on there now. I tried to take a picture with them installed but it was too dark in the garage this evening.

I'm not sure what to cover it with. Any ideas...???

Super clean looking. What kind of locks did you add? I would love to make one of these to protect my photo gear.

I wonder how much lighter/heavier an all steel enclosure with carpet would be? Wish I knew how to weld.

The locks are 5/8'' drawer locks found in the door section of Home Depot. To be honest, they aren't the best. I just broke one today. Any better ideas for locks that won't break? A metal box would be best but can weigh a lot. If metal is what you want I would go with aluminum as it won't be as heavy. Mine probably weighs in at 150 or 200 pounds unloaded.

Thanks. I still need to find a better way to lock them though. The locks that I have in there now aren't very good at all. Any ideas?

Standart furniture lock will work but may not be strong for your application:

Thanks for the advice. The standard furnature lock in the first picture may not be strong enough like you said. But I wonder if a standard dead bolt off a door would work?
