I did a search, but could not find anyone that has done this..

I replaced the front speakers (dash and door)... Huge improvement.

Now need to get some bass in the car -- has anyone bought or built a custom sub box for the rear?

I have been talking with my stereo guy and I am planning on replacing all 8 speakers with kickers and doing 2 8in subs in front of the sliding cargo tray so I don't lose much cargo space

I was thinking of a 10" on the drivers side over the wheel well in the back. Going to talk to the stereo guy soon to figure it out. Oh and replace all speakers and give adequate power.

I was thinking about going with a good 5 channel amp to power it all and leave the stock deck so it appears factory

Hey there. I have the Infinity Kappa's that I plan on replacing the dash speakers with but I am interested in knowing which speakers you used for the doors. I read somewhere in another thread that these were not a typical size and that only base came out of those. If you could tell me what exactly you have installed in the doors and what if any problems you encountered I would be grateful. Thanks.

I put in Boston Acoustic SL95s - 4 ohm speakers that match up with the 3 1/2 in BAs in the dash. The 95s are 6x9 - no problem getting these in - I had a pair of TacoTune adapters so I did not have to custom build new ones to get the speakers to fit.

BTW - I do have a non-nav TE (KDSS) with the standard 8 speaker system..

Like others have mentioned, anything would be better than the paper-coned speakers that Toyota put in this car -- after seeing this, I will be replacing the other 4 speakers, adding an amp, and possibly look into a sub..

Which tacotune adapters do you have that fit the 6x9's having difficulty finding some adapters. Thanks!

To the OP:

I know someone on here has down a fiberglass box in the cargo area on the passenger side.. I just can't find the picture. I got a quote for a fiberglass box from a local shop for $350. Haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Edit: Found the pic...http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/68592-new-stereo.html

Also, another option is buying the stock parts from the 15 speaker JBL system.. They have a sub enclosure that is in the cargo area on the passenger side. This option is very expensive though. I started accumulating the part #'s and getting quotes. One of the main pieces was $580. After hearing that I was over it. Supposedly "jnbthomas" did this mod to retain the factory look, but he never posted pics...:wtf:

Did you get any bass out of the Boston Acoustics in the Door? I just replaced the dash with Kappas and thinking about doing the doors too. I don't know if I want to go the whole amp route yet.

Hey guy, I want to begin the process of installing speakers in my 5th Gen. Before I can though, I need a few Q's answered. Can someone give me the speaker sizes (dash/doors/hatch) for the basic radio: N/A nav and Non JBL. I ask because I've been told three diff sizes by diff sources (Best Buy/Crutchfield/local shop). So I need to know the ACTUAL sizes. Also, I've heard that the rear two hatch speakers are factory subs...? Any truth to that...I don't want to go wasting time buying the wrong equip. I'm looking into Alpine's Type S or Type R products and also wondered if their tweeter will fit in place of the stock tweets. I know a lot of guys/gals here lean towards Kappa but figured if I'm going to go with Alpine, might as well go all the way.
