custom sub box for the rear storage compartment

For those of you that want a little sub in the back but dont want to lose cargo space. it is possible to build a sub box for the back. I dont have build pics and it was not easy. but 4 days later it came out better then i ever would have thought. Hope you enjoy.

That looks good dude, I bet it was a PITA though. If I didn't have a big ass sub box I'd get one of those custom mounts, forget who made them - although they are probably discontinued. Anyways nice work. What subwoofer did you decide on putting in there?
 
You can still find them on crutchfield.com in the custom enclosures section. I cant remember who makes them either, but i know they run somewhere near $500. That looks great however, what did it end up costing you as far as money and time?
 
Its a elemental designs 6in sub which cost $40.
The mdf cost $8
Time was A LOT close to 18-20 hrs. trying to figure out how to get all the right volumes and how to mount it and blah blah blah. it was worth it IMO. its got a 200w RMS amp behind it.
 
Mhmm thats nice! since I live so close to you might you be able to help me with one? haha maybe just maybe ill get you a growler from Sierra Nevada to go along with the bulid. :p
 
its perty strait forward, hardest part is getting the right ft^3 in the such small space. deepest part is 5in deep and the body is curved at the back. the mounting it i built an Al shelf that i taped 2 holes in so i can secure it from the speaker hole....cant exactly reach behind it. i got 6.5in infintiy response comps for the front and 5.25 infinity response for the rears on the way. should be here in a few days.
 
yes the radio antenna is a split antenna with the main metal one up front and the small one in the back window. you need to get the proper splitter for it, and the jack size converter for the rear antenna.

oh, and JL audio makes a custom box like yours, but its a little bigger, and i believe it can fit a 10 inch sub

I have a 10 inch that I would love to get out of the way! but Im also worried about acoustics, how is the sound from a box thats mounted in the side like that??

What did you do with your rear cargo storage lid/cover and maybe the the black thing that lines the inside of the cargo compartment?

how much cu ft did you end up getting back there? Based on my rough calculations there is enough volume for at least an 8kv3 or an 11kv3 with some fiberglassing

I called Car Toys as they are a vendor of JL audio and they inf me that their guys had done cases like that one for cheaper that supposedly sound better than the JL ones... JL ones run about 550$

said he could prob do one for my 4runner from 250-300$

only thing I am worried about building my own is acoustics, but think I might be ok, I already have a 10" sub in there now, would be nice to tuck it out of the way!

the cover is sitting on the floor in my room and the black thing is somewhere at the dump haha. I drilled out the plastic welds and got rid of it. I didnt use it anyway.


As far as the volume back there, im running ~.25 ft^3. thats what my sub calls for. To have it flush mounted like mine, it would be a push to get to the .5 range. oh and my box cost ~8 for the MDF, then a bottle of glue i had laying around, some silicone laying around and screwed it together also.

As for the acoustics, for normal volumes it sounds great. once you crank it up it still sounds good, but you gotta l alot of stuff vibrating around ex all the plastic panels

do you know where i can find the proper splitter? I found the normal sized one burried in the bottom of all the wires and got it plugged in so i have radio now.
