Customizing Subwoofer Location.

Okay, so can anyone tell me if this will work:

I drew up a simple top veiw sketch and side viewalso of what I think would be pretty cool subwoofers locations in my 4runner trunk.

My dream would be to make somthing like this:

I've always hated how the Wheel gets in the way and is uneven so you cant really put certain luggage items on top of it. If i made a rectangle box from the back of the seat to the rear of the 4runner, and insert a Subwoofer between the sheel and the very back, i think that would be amazing.

I would then carpet the whole wooden box, so it would be a flat surface vertically and horizontally. on Both sides.

Do you guys think this would work?

Have you ever seen this preformed like this?

If you think this could work, have any good tips for me?

What size subwoofer do you think could fit?

What brand would you recommend?

should i put the amplifier somewhere in the box, or should i put it under one of the front seats like most people do?


PS: The picture is horrible and doesnt represent what i have in mind. There would be no space between the seats and the rear of the vehicle between the wooden box.

I'm sure there are more builds...but is one that I knew of. [MENTION=95329]txbonds[/MENTION] has a '97 4R, which he gutted it due to the PO's dog eating the interior. Anyway...he built in a sub where you're look at. I think he starts the sub build in post #5...although you should read the whole deal. He starts out by putting in sound damper in, which would help your cause also.

I have a few questions while you search. Why do you need 2 subs?
1 12" will certainly do the trick.

Why build it out of wood?
For that I would recommend a back wall made from fiberglass.
Why so much space?
That's at least 5 cu.ft.

Start with calculations and measurements.

My .02 is use a single 12" sub with a dvc design and a sealed box. I would use the cubby on the passenger side for your box with a shallow mount sub and leave it at that.

Even a single 10 would be enough if it was of decent quality. Hell, most high end OEM stuff now are running 8's.

I must be getting old lol. A single 13.3 from JL running 1k would be more than "noise".

FWIW OP, I have an 8" under my driver seat and its perfect. Its powered in the same unit so all I had to do was run a few wires. Took an hour.

Heres what i did...

Custom box on driver side, carpeted, sealed, and anchored through the inside to the sheet metal just behind the side panelling.

1 - 10" Slimline JL Subwoofer (more than enough, and JL i highly reccommend)

Custom made to:

- The right air volume required
- Low enough that the tonneau cover still goes over if need be
- Hight enough that the trunk liner tray can still utilize the raised edge without cutting and can be lifted in and out.

Personally i reccommend a similar set up as you dont lose trunk space really (width of rear hatch access) and better yet it retains having that storage compartment on the rear passenger side. Always handy to have.

I Have a similar set up. With the addition of good speakers and tweeters, my system sounds reeeaaall nicee

i know subwoofers have manufacturers specifications for the size of area inside the box but downs' anyone have any experience with having too much air space or not enough?...

i want to fill the entire area behind the two sets with a sub box that extends the whole width of the vehicle.

Right now i have a 10" in my 1998 4runner. I pushed it back up against my back seats. The reason i want to put it on the side, is so i have a perfectly flat surface for luggage. And i would do one subwoofer on each side, because usualy i am very picky and would want it to look symetrical.

I really dont know if i would choose wood, but its all ive seen people use so far, and its probly the cheapest way to go.
