Customizing Subwoofer Location.

Thanks. Looks good. I was mainly curious about how you made the wood look like plastic. What did you coat it with?

I love the look and function of this, but I want to maintain that cargo space (I keep my hitch, a tow strap, and a small first aid kit in there). Is there anything on the drivers side that would have to be accommodated for if I wanted to do a similiar setup on the other side?

Does anyone have pictures of that side with that rear panel off? If I can see what's back there to deal with without pulling the panel, that might save some efforts if it's unreasonable to build it in that spot.

Do you have a free air subwoofer, or a small box built for it? I might just end up going that route, although I'm not sure if I can fit anything under the electric seats with the rear vents as well.

it's actually in a powered case. it's a sub/amp combo. It doesn't sound amazing, but not bad either. I'm looking to upgrade to a Kicker underseat powered sub unit to go with my Kicker speakers. I'm not sure it's worth mentioning what brand is under there now. Lol.
 
Curious as to why no one has mentioned the factory 4th Gen JBL sub. Searched a bit on it myself out of curiosity and either I'm using the wrong terms, no one has tried it or no one has thought of it.

To me, it looks like it would fit.

FWIW OP, I have an 8" under my driver seat and its perfect. Its powered in the same unit so all I had to do was run a few wires. Took an hour.

What kind of sub is that Millerad? Did you make the enclosure or did it come that way?

I filled all the holes with some wood putty and sanded every surface down very, VERY smooth. Then it's 3-4 coats of primer sanded thoroughly between each and followed up with several coats of ACE hardwares Khaki gloss. I couldn't believe how well it matched the oak interior color.
Regarding my sound quality...
The air space is rather small (I calculated .65ft³) because I intended to purchase newer subs, but these MTX 4500's came up really cheap so I grabbed them. I haven't even thought about running them out of phase... Do you think I should give it a shot? I'm only running about 300watts (not bridged). Once I hooked everything up, it sounded so good I never even questioned it. But now I'm catching the "boom" bug again...

Sounds great and I didn't lose any cargo space. And I ran the level adjustment to the middle console in an empty spot. So I can easily adjust the level of the sub for different music, or when my wife and little girl are riding with me.

That's the one I was looking at. Do you have manual or automatic seats? I have electric, and after building a cardboard mock-up, I thought for sure that it would not fit without major compression on the speaker. But if you have it fitting with only the grill getting scraped a bit (and if you have auto seats), then I'm ordering it today.

I'm not looking for huge bass, just something to fill the sound out a bit. I also have a wife and daughter, and have no intent on beating their ears out with a huge sub set up, but the low end on these small speakers in the 4runner is anemic at best. I could keep the volume lower as long as there is some bottom end to support actually hear a rhythm.

I actually have the manual seats. I had it the way in the pic and it scraped the top, but I flipped it 180* and it fit without touching.

We put the same sub under jmildocs power seat and it fit. It was a tighter fit, and took a little finagling, but we got it.

The sub is perfect for adding a little low end to the door speakers. At about 1/3 power it's good for general listening. If I want to rock out, I'll turn it all the way up and it'll rattle the mirrors...but still not bother other people.

That is an amazingly good looking setup. I love the space kept by using this method, and the TRD sign. Thats definitely a possobilty for my dream RUNNER :P

You don't have much room. And 8" sub could fit, but a 10 would have to cut.

I have my VIAIR compressor back there so it's not in the elements
