CV axle question

I recently bought a set of used CV axles from someone and while doing the install found that the threads on the outer end are bad and the lock nut won't go on. The guy is sending another axle so I will be swapping that one in. My question is would it be ok to just put a cater pin on the end and drive around with it like that until the new one comes in? I obviously would not use 4wd.

It's been sitting on jacks for 4 days now. I had been borrowing my GFs sister's camry since she is not using it, but unfortunately... we got a really bad storm yesterday and I'm pretty sure I hydro locked it. FML

Absolutey not. The nut holds the wheel bearings together. If you drove with just a cotter pin, the hub will fall apart.

All I needed to know, thanks for the quick reply. Hopefully the new one gets here soon..

Anybody rebooted before? I was thinking of just using the outer housing from my old one and the other half from the new(used) one and just rebooting the outer joint. Only problem is I can't figure out how do get the outer end off.

Remove the boot, the cv should come out of the "socket" then theres a clip holding the cv to the shaft. If you're in a bind you can just take the cv apart and bolt the "stub" in so you can drive it for now.

That's the inner end(the side that allows in and out movement. I'm talking about the outer end. It seems like it was pressed on.

Oh gotcha, I've never done a boot, it's easier just to replace them and I don't have one here to see how it comes apart to help ya out.

is pressed in, there is O ring installed inside.... u need to fill it up w grease etc etc-hard- dirty- buy a rebuild one- way better and cheaper, safer

I just did my CV's a weekend or two ago and got two rebuilt for 90.00 each...I thought I got a good deal...

I got the two used ones for $75. The plan is to re-boot the old ones to carry as spares. I'll still be doing that since I can wait for the new one he is sending me to get here. I finished fixing the Camry yesterday so I'll be able to drive that until the new CV gets here. Then I'll get complete boot sets and changing them will be much easier.

Now i know you have had your front hubs apart, and you know that they take a 20 ton press to get them apart. Those wheel bearings are pressed in to the knuckle. Im sure they wouldnt fall apart without the cv in them.

As a whole it wouldn't likely come out but the ball bearings and inner race could definitely separate and ruin your day, not really worth the chance either way.
