CV Axle questions

2000 4runner Limited - need to change out both CV axles

Planning on buying rebuilt full axles

questions -

1. Is there any brand of aftermarket axle that compares to OEM quality? Prices seem to be all over the place. Don't mind paying a premium but would like ones that would last the 16 years and 150K the stock ones did.

2. Are there any seals that need to be done when doing the axles?

Most people are going to say just go with autozone/o'reilly's/napa rebuilt cv axles. Most of the time they are OEM Toyota anyways.
Make sure you pull your dust shields off the old CV's. Most of the time the new ones have them on there still, but they are expensive to order from Toyota.

2 trains of thought regarding seals to be done.
1) if it ain't broke, don't replace it. As long as you are slow and careful, no need to do the differential axle seal. they probably will continue to not leak.

2) since you are in there, might as well replace the axle seal so you don't have to get in there again.

I opted for option one, however had the axle seal start leaking 6 months later, so I wish I would have just replaced them when I was in there.

Why not just get them rebuilt and rebooted?

I started with option 1, and very quickly progressed to option 2. The seals are only a few $$ and not hard to replace. Just as well do it while you're in there.

I used NAPA rebuilts on my '94 and on one side of the '06. I'm happy with them. Other side of the '06 is coming up.
 
these pretty hard to change out? is there a certain preventative time period should do so? just bought a 98 with 177,000 on it
 
I don't know if these things actually ever wear out. People either break them on trails, or the boots eventually split. Good news is you can drive for a while with leaking boots, so you can pretty much wait until it happens and then deal with it.
 
I been running none OEM cv for a while. Only upgrade I didn't before installing them was I upgraded the boots to all pro extended cv boots. So far so good.
 
All the major parts houses offer rebuilt units, anyone have some advice on who has the best boots on their units as they seem to be the weakpoint?

Anyone have the part #'s for the seals at the diff?
