Can someone clear up something for me? I was under the impression that the left and right cv axles for our 4runners (mines a 2003) had a different diameter and were not interchangeable but the axles are listed as fitting left and right side on many websites. Can anyone help me out?

They are exactly the same.

Just bought new CV's and the part number listed in the catalog where I bought them was the same for both left and right sides

some after market cv axles hv different nos of spline teeth, this comes into play if you want to change only the outer part of the leave, leaving the other end inside the differential

Wouldn't that mean that it wont seat in the diff/hub if the spline count was different? Unless they also supply beefier hubs/diff input to match their CV spline count?

What i mean is..for someone that doesnt want to bother removing the inner half of the shaft, and just wants to install a used longer half circled in Green...unless he has a matching part circled in red, he would run into a problem. This scenario happens, when moving from some aftermarket to oem.

In my scenario, i got only the half half shaft circled in blue.without the trilobe ring circled in red.the splines on the used unit (circled in green) i got is 30, while the splines on the bad one in the truck i was replacing is 29, hope you get the drift now.

That makes sense, I haven't gotten as far as dissecting the 4Runners axles as I have with other vehicles CV Axles. Thanks for the visual!!

any tips on differentiating oem cv axles from after market ones?, i came across a new cv axle, private seller claims its oem, unsure how to verify his claims
