Brand shiny new cyclone pre-filter from 2008 FJ Cruiser 17730-31030

Out with the old using 12mm on the bolts and 10mm on the clamp

It is strictly a pre-filter to remove extra dirt when offroading. The vanes cause the dirt to be trapped in the rubber fitting at the bottom which is occaisionally squeezed to release it.

Absolutely no change in horsepower as per Toyota's published figures for the 4Runner and FJ Cruiser. Any stated differences are due to runnning two different grades of gas which are accounted for. I have the stock exhaust so there will be no change in sound.

This is NOT one of those hokey plates people used to put in under their carbs.

I need to go back and incorporate a similar "scoop" as it provides splash protection from water in the wheel well. Not a huge concern out here but I don't want to get lazy and forget and then have to ford some desert stream...

I don't think it will work with the V8 from what some friends/V8 owners have said.

here is the scoop the FJs have inside the fenderwell so I am looking for a used one from some guys who have installed their snorkels and removed the air scoop

was about $89 plus $12 shipping from Vegas to the OC

When I was getting ready to add a scoop to the inlet I pulled the dust drain-nipple-thingy and discovered just how much street dust the prefilter had grabbed in 3 or 4 days of use


The FJ Cruiser inlet scoop is not going in. It is a huge headache to pull the inner fenderwell skirt and halfway thru I gave up and put it back.

I bought a PVC "street elbow" with a flange on one end which I shortened up and I modified the inlet area too


On the pre-filter I cut its rubber inlet flange back about an inch leaving a little ridge to ensure a tight fit. I used a silicone type sealent to glue it together

I added a new strip of rubber sponge weather stripping and plugged the whole thing back into the fenderwell.

The inlet is angled slightly upward which gives me roughly 40-41 inches above the ground for water fording
