Cylinder #5 Misfire

I have a 98 4-Runner SR5 and the other day it sarted running real rough. My mechanic says that the code shows a misfire in cylinder #5. He already tested the coil packs, checked the plugs and wires and now thinks it could be a bad or clogged injector. I have 202,000+/- miles on it. Any suggestions?

Swap coil packs to see if the miss moves (sometimes the problem is intermittent and they don't always "fail" as they are being tested). If the wires are old I would just replace them. The coil boot may also be the cause, so if the miss moves when you swap the coil pack, you could try to just change the boot 1st which is a lot cheaper than the coil itself. If that works change the other 2 boots on the other coil packs.

This describes how to check the injector for function. Do what Brian2sun described in addition to ensuring you have dual electrode plugs in there.

My truck had the same problem (#5 cylinder too). Mechanic determined it was a clogged injector after ruling everything else out. I really try to only use Exxon gas as they are the only ones to not use ethanol in unleaded (everyone else uses 10-15%).

Well we have determined the problem.......a defective spark plug:tongue:

My mechanic pulled originally checked the wrong cylinder and determined it could be the injector:happens: After he went back he realized that he checked the wrong cylinder and when he pulled the sparkplug in cylinder #5 he determined the spark plug was broke causing the misfire! Easy fix and alot cheaper than I thought.....:jump:

At least he was honest. And he caught his mistake. I never seem to run into those guys  Can't say I've never made the same mistake! Easy fix
