D-ring hitch

I just ordered some recovery gear, and among the purchases was this:

I'm pretty sure this is the right size hitch for my 06 SR5 V6.... but it doesn't quite fit. It seems like the issue is with the small ridge that runs the length of the tongue (looks like where the two pieces were welded together). That ridge is just barely big enough in prevent the tongue from sliding all the way into the receiver.

So... what do I do? I was thinking about just getting a file or my dremel and grinding away that ridge a bit... but is this a defect that I should return it over instead?

That's strange, I have the same one (from Amazon too) and don't have that problem. It'd prolly be easiest to grind & paint but it's your call.

On the other hand Id be a little disappointed and maybe call someone or something? Can you return it without paying anything?

Well the folks at Amazon's customer support are usually clueless, so I just emailed Smittybilt directly to see what they recommend.

Hmm... maybe I just got one from a bad batch. I'll give smittybilt a day to respond, then I'll try exchanging it through amazon.

I saw this post and laughed. The first one I bought fit perfectly. I let my friend borrow it and he lost the shackle so he paid me for it. I bought the exact same one in the link above and it had the same issue with the ridge. It did not fit. Returned it and got the replacement. Same ridge issue and returned it. Maybe you got my returns.....

Well I never heard back from smittybilt... but figured I would make the best of what I had. We took it to Lowe's, and the took an angle grinder to it at no cost. It fits now, but I have to figure out a good protective paint to cover the exposed bare metal.

I tried plastidip, but it peeled off when I put it in/out of the receiver.

Use rustoleum spray paint.

Mine is loose. My buddy works at a machine shop and made me one It looks almost the exact same though!

That's awesome of Lowe's to do that for you; I have very cynical views of big-box stores.
FWIW, I have a Warn receiver shackle. It's a little loose for my taste, but it really doesn't rattle around (and is definitely beefy).

So what did you end up with?

I bought the receiver back from my friend and just bought the d-ring on amazon. Funny thing, it was slightly loose so i wrapped it in electrical tape to make it snug. I would look somewhere else and avoid the headache.
