Damn, 4500 mile 3rd-gen on ebay

Well it looks nice looks new. I would wonder if there could be some problems arise if it starts to be driven daily. The buy it now price is insane. even tho it is barely broken in I would not pay that kind of money for it. hey but that is just me. I will watch this just to see what the bid goes up to and if it sells.

Bid is up to 18K that's already way too much for what it is. People pay 10K over sticker for the TRD Pro through so there are almost definitely people stupid enough to over pay for this also.

I know I wouldn't pay 40k for that one. It's nice but not worth that kind of money. I dont see them being super classics as they get order.

These are not 1969 dodge chargers or 1955 Chevy convertibles.

I am curious what they consider a restored one as. I have seen great restore jobs and also very crappy ones in vehicles over the years.

If I had to choose, I think this one would be a MUCH better choice:

Completely restored to brand new: new interior, paint everywhere, everything in engine bay is new except for the block, looks amazing.

scroll down to see all the pictures. SO good looking

Sorry, it's not a better choice. Sure, it has fancy new parts and a some what decent respray, but this truck for sure had rust on the frame. Take a look at the rear lower control arm brackets. Evidence of sanded away rust on them. They resprayed the frame with barbecue grill primer black. These guys are trying to pull off what Jonathan Ward at TLC rebuilds does, except they're on a tight budget. They need to stick at what they're good at, and that is being a car dealer.

Is it just me or does it look like there was rust on the frame that was painted over and is now bubbling?

No rust or prior rust. Just their lack of effort of cleaning the frame. If it had any amount of rust, the undercarriage bolts would have been rusty as well, and the aluminum transfer case and trans would have showed oxidation. As you can tell, they are in like-new finish.

The new ones are better in every way than my 3rd gen. My wife Trd pro is in every category an improvement over the 3rd gen. Driving the Pro on long road trips you are very comfortable and rested vs the 3rd gen. Offroading in stock form with bigger offroad tires it outperforms my 3rd gen. I still love the 3rd gen and it is my project vehicle for sure.
Yeah, but are they 8x better to justify the price?

This one's for sale in Vancouver. Pretty decent. Diesel and everything. Save a bundle and buy it instead. Use money saved and store it until it's ready to export to the USA.
These Japanese imports are usually rust free. Mine is spotless in, under and out.

Yikes. They really should wait till they have hands on it and paint correct and detail it before they post em up with that kind of price tag. I'd be embarrassed. At least auction flippers here have the car before they try to make a quick flip out of it.

You're comparing almost identical platforms as far as wheeling goes. Turn off the electrical nannies that the new 4runners are equipped with and it quickly levels out the playing field. Similarly equipped they should be very close to the same as far as capabilities go.

Yeah a detail would sure help.

Would there be any concern about the engine internals having moved around 240 miles per year? I believe I've heard that oil needs to be changed every xxxx miles or X! Months

Would there be any danger of corrosion having pitted the internals with the oil hardly moving around??

Absolutely. Rubber and plastic off-gasses regardless of use and begins to dry out the minute it cools down from being made.

The good news is Toyota uses (and used back then) higher quality rubber and plastic parts so they last longer. Where the vehicle sits for those 25 years matters too (outside vs inside).

The reason oil, which will last 5 years once the seal is broken on a bottle of oil, needs to be changed once a year is because the contaminants from the carbon from running the engine will cause acidic changes in the oil. How many miles on the oil matters too though. With 240 miles on it; I wouldn't be concerned. I'd even go 2 years instead of the recommended 1 year with that few miles before changing the oil.

So sealed bearing and rubber/plastic parts should be changed possibly but unsealed bearings and metal parts will be just like any vehicle with 5k miles on it; regardless of age. Obviously changing all the fluids and greasing anything with a zerk fitting would be a good thing to do right away if the vehicle is to be used and not just planted on a display floor.

Having just changed the rear axle bearings on my 01; I can see they sit in a protected nearly air tight place so I wouldn't necessarily change those but I would probably change the inner seals and outer O rings.

The transmission in the newer ones shifts like mush, plus only comparing the trd pro is a bit unfair. Since it has the manual transfer case, but the others don't... That's my 2nd biggest complaint but it applies to all vehicles now days I guess.

I will say the trd pro is cool, but honestly it should be the base model. (Doesn't have to include the shocks)

As far as comfort...what? I've ridden in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gens and the 3rds have the best seats to me. The new ones feel too flat and stiff. Maybe different body types or spines?

Honestly it's a totally different vehicle, too big and fat like all vehicles are legally obligated to be now days... but I guess that isn't its' fault.

Except the new ones suck...lol

If I had that kind of cash I'd start my offer at 30k after inspecting it.

Not even close to being a fair evaluation of the 3rd gen vs 5th gen.

The transmission is 100% better on the 5th gen. My 3rd gen can't use cruise control when it is under load due to head wind , hills , weight, etc. Rpms run high trying to do the same work but that is because of the lack of power and torque in its motor. The transmission and motor combo on the 5th gen allow me to tow my canam x3 trailer combo with zero issues. That combo is over 4500 lbs. I wouldn't even try to tow that combo with my 3rd gen down to shop because the big hill would make it too much.

The motor on my 5th gen is rock solid and with a full load only my Tundra is more comfortable. Yes they both are v6 so neither are superb at towing but the 5th gen will tow my lite loads very well. The size and weight and longer wheel base along with the bigger motor makes it a easy win over the 3rd gen. My son's third gen is definitely quicker but doesn't tow as well despite upgraded suspension.

4wd system on the Pro is a beast in stock form. Yes now that my 3rd gen has a suspension upgrade and lockers it is a better offroad vehicle but all well built aftermarket mods make any vehicle superior to stock. In stock form the 5th gen is a beast. If i'm running hard and fast down rutted fire roads chasing my x3 the 5th gen can handle the rough terrain. No it can't keep up with a 90 mph utv but the 3rd gen is not capable of doing this safely without serious power mods and a long travel or mid travel kit. The suspension on my pro is far better in stock form. It is actually a very capable stock vehicle.

In order to fairly evaluate a vehicles ride and the comfort factor you got to drive both vehicles for miles and long road trips to be Fair. I've got 311,000 miles on my 3rd gen. I know everything about that vehicles and its pros and minus in every condition. It is great for short trips and running around town. When I want to head out with the German Shepards and get into the back country for days with gear I take the 3rd gen. When I go snowboarding and have to drive 4 men for 400 miles I take the 5th gen. The 5th gen is comfortable has power and room for all our gear and bodies. No one has issues riding in that vehicle. The high winds and mtns don't slow it down. The motor transmission interior suspension sounds all beat my 3rd gen on big boy road trips.

The 3rd gen is still my fav but it is that because of history not because it is superior to the 5th gen. The Trd pro 5th gen is perfect for what we use it for and is far superior to my 3rd gen in every meaningful category. Now the 4th gen is every bit the vehicle the 5th gen and is actually quicker because it is lighter. The 3rd gen is still the best built 4runner ever. Maybe the best built Toyota next to the tundra ever.

Now someone asked is the 5th gen Trd Pro is worth 8x the price over the 3rd gen? That is all perspective and whether you can afford the new truck. For me absolutely yes it is because it is my wife's truck and because it is safer it makes it worth it. THe other reasons I mentioned above makes it a easy decision

I see they didn't say it has new tires.
What do you want to bet that the auction winner drives on 23 year old rubber and has a blowout within a week and gets in a wreck?

BoomerBob good to know.

Fortunately I'll never have to worry about only doing 240miles a year LOL.

If it's got wheels it's going to get ridden or driven.

Hell, if I had an exotic that's not "meant to be a DD": I'd DD it and find a way to put a bike rack on it. ☺
