Camry vs. Accord vs. Legacy

My wife HAS to get a new car this spring (after months of half-heartedly lookng). We test drove the V6 XLE Camry last weekend. Very nice, although a bit too "soft" for my taste. More brake fade then my '92 Camry. The reclining rear seat in the XLE is a nice touch. The wife wanted a Nav system and they don't ship them to our area, but we can get one from PA. (MSRP $30,840) Wife likes the aluminum color trim in the SE better than the fake light wood in the XLE. To be honest, none of the colors except silver appeal to me (and we make the paint!). The wife does like the dark blue though.

I want her to test drive the Accord this weekend. I personally liked the Subaru Legacy GT Limited. A nice tight suspension and the turbo 4 kicks butt. The wife likes the exterior styling and interior better, albeit there is less rear seat room. Gas mileage is not that great with the AWD and Subaru doesn't offer stability control though.

Interestingly, I was just down at TMMK yesterday and saw the new Camrys coming off the line.

Been there, done that. The 2005 Legacy GT Limited was my third Subie. Please think twice about the new Subaru's. I get better gas mileage in my 4Runner than I did in the Subie. Plus, build quality was a concern.

Thanks for the feedback. What problems did you have with the Legacy? Subaru has a good reliability rating per Consumer Reports (among the top five brands or so if my memory serves)and now since Toyota owns 8.7% of SIA, I would expect reliability to improve.

This spring Toyota will start to build Camrys in the Subaru facility in Indiana.

I know gas mileage sucks. The guys at the Legacy forums seem to average about 18 - 19 MPG which is as good or slightly worse than my V8 4Runner. I also heard that their Nav system is poorly designed - if you can even find a car that has it.

My wife also likes the looks of the Outback sedan with it's higher height and agressive looks.

Shut the door of a Subaru, then do the same for a Toyota. You'll feel a difference, and that's just a sign of build quality of Toyota's throughout the whole car both of what you can/cannot see.

I've often wondered why manufacturers don't spend more time making their doors sound good when you close them. To me, it's a big indicator of overall build quality.

The Acura TSX has a crappy door feel to it upon closing, but after driving one for the weekend, I liked the car beyond the door quality.

That said, I still think the Legacy GT looks fantastic and I still like Subarus overall.

My car had so many rattles and squeaks, it was driving me crazy. I only had 20k miles on the car when I traded it. I was also on my 6th. headlight, 3 each side. There were so many other nit pick items, I can't list them. The motor is very reliable, but it takes premium. Highway mileage is good, but city is just terrible. The car was also a rollerskate in the snow and ice. The power combined with crappy tires, and lack of traction control, was very unpredictable. The car was very fun to drive though. But at a 32k price tag, I expect Audi build quality. The Subaru isn't close.

About the doors. Subaru claims their door is made better because they take the window frame material and apply it in the door. It's also kid friendly, you can close your fingers in the frameless part of the window. Those are the two points they always tried to sell to me.

With all the problems I had with my car. I would still consider the base Outback without the turbo. Even in the mountains, that motor would be fine. I should've kept my 99 Outback, that car was rock solid.

Check out legacygt.com - Look through the warranty repair section. It's out of control. Especially when I compare that car to my new 4Runner. It's night and day.

Edmunds Comparison

Edmunds rated the new 07 Camry V6 XLE top dog in it's recent shoot-out between the Accord, Sonata, and Fusion. They said the Camry scored a faster 0 - 60 MPH time than a recent BMW 330i!

We did test drive it and is is deceptively fast.

Very nice feature. My wife is leaning towards the V6 Camry XLE with NAV. Now to see what colors she can live with and try to get a good deal. The Camrys in our regions do not come in with NAV so maybe we can get one out of the Eastern Atlantic region - PA.

Of course I can get a supplier discount on Honda, Nissan, Subaru, and GM - but not Toyota and they are our biggest customer!
