I searched, but couldn't find what I was looking for. I worked on the truck tonight (which is why I'm still up, dangit) and after taking the skids off, it was obvious that the clanging sound I was getting from hitting bumps at decent speeds was caused by that thing that is bolted to the transfer case....hitting the belly skid. The horseshoe shaped weight is isolated by a rubber mount, so it was obviously designed for something...but what?
I assume it's a counterweight or a dampener. It's just bolted there with two bolts, and it doesn't look like it does much at all. Can I take it off? I would prefer to not hear "clang CLANG" every time I hit decent bump in the road. There is only about 1/4" of clearance between the thingy (whatever it is) and the skid.
