Been lurking for a while and I've finally decided to start a build thread.

The day I bought it. May 2011 109000 miles. 1997 SR5 4WD




About 7 months after I bought it, some idiot pulled out in front of me. December 2011




Instead of fixing the bumper and running boards, I ordered and ARB. If the B**** that pulled out in front of me had insurance, it would have been free. Instead, I had a $500 deductible. But $400 wasn't bad. February 2012




Little bit of fun offroad was in order.




Two flats in one week led to new tires. May 2012
Cooper Discoverer St Maxx 265/75/16
Great Tires. I loved them. Never let me down.





New rims. May 2013

I did a pioneer touchscreen in dash and speakers and sub and amps somewhere in there too.
That was about it until this past February.

Front and rear lift, rock sliders, and rear bumper/tire carrier parts ordered. February 2015

Parts starting to pile up.



Thats all for now. I hope to have the rear bumper finished by the end of July.
After that, my next course of action will be a locker and skids.

I didn't take any pictures of the install, but this isn't a write up. Here is the after photos:

Just some cheap tires to hold me over for now. Hard to beat $700 for 5 tires mounted and balanced. It does help when your dad works at a tire shop though.




Bought a welder to make my rear bumper and weld on my sliders.


Was up til 12:30 AM the night before Jamboree welding on my sliders, and I woke up at 6 AM to paint them. I got Stubbs HD-SKO from Sonoran Steel when I ordered my lift. Probably because of lack of sleep I forgot to take pictures. Then I headed to Jamboree. I was having such a good time there, I forgot to take any pictures.

I had hoped to have my rear bumper done for Jamboree but I ran out of time. I still haven't had time to finish, but I am making progress.


Not too bad for the first time welding in 5 years.

Thanks. I don't have a tube bender and I didn't want to buy one. It was easier to just buy them. I probably should have just bought a cbi rear bumper too. It would have been cheaper/easier in the long run, especially if you consider the time I've put into the build. But hey, Built not Bought, right?
I'm enjoying it, but it has definitely been more work than I thought it would be.
 
I got incredibly lucky on a random trip to the pick and pull yesterday, and I returned this morning to pull it. I had just gone there to waste time. I'm still in shock that I got it.





complete rear e locker axle, e locker ecu, and front diff for $416.86.

My rear bumper is now on the back burner.
Hopefully I will be able to test the locker in the next couple of days. If all is good, I'll start taking the axles, 3rd, and everything off. I'll get the housing sandblasted and painted and get everything installed.

If anybody wants to help me by sharing links on install, it would be appreciated. I also need to make sure the housing isn't bent. Any tips or advice is welcome.

thanks for all the info boys, locker works great! here's what i found on 1 of the links. this is the safe way to test it without fear of jamming it:

[1] [2] [ ] <----- 5 pin plug on the diff, blank one is in the upper right corner.


[3] [4] [5]

"to lock the unit, put the alligator clip across pin 3 and pin 1. Apply +12v to pin 5 and ground pin 2. While the unit is transitioning from the unlocked to the locked state, pin 3 is connected to pin 5, and so pin 1 receives +12v. Once the unit determines that it has moved far enough to be locked, pin 3 becomes disconnected from pin 5, pin 1 no longer receives +12v and so the motor stops."

"Likewise, to unlock the unit, simply put the alligator clip across pins 2 & 4 and apply +12v to pin 5 and ground pin 1. Once the unit is unlocked, the connection between pins 4 & 5 is broken, and pin 2 no longer receives +12v."

I've been searching for a way to test it, but most threads link this site, but the page is gone.

The rust didn't look that bad at the pick and pull, but looking at the pictures now, it has me worried.
 
Axles set up for rebuild.
-new seals, bearings, and brake shoes


I'm also going to do new LBJ and CV axles
 








E-locker housing cleaned up, painted, new parts installed, and ready to swap out.



Wait for it...






Boom!


E-locker rear end installed and working. Front diff to match the rear installed as well. and what a mf-er to get that out/in.
New parts intalled:
Rear bearings/retainers/abs rings
Rear axle seals
Rear brake shoes and springs
Lower ball joints and bolts
New inner boots on CV axles
Front brake pads




I installed my CB radio yesterday as well.
 
I need to update this more often.
Not a whole lot to update but several pictures to share.

With the E locker done, I got back to the rear bumper.












After about 2 hours of grinding.




With the bumper mostly done except for paint, I headed to Hidden Falls Adventure Park for FJ Fallout











Well on a night run, my rear gate and window lost a battle with a tree. Window was shattered.


Even with the damage, I enjoyed this trip a lot.

New rear gate.

I had to have painted white, and just in case anybody was wondering, a gate from an 01 is not straight plug and play with a 97. Switching the wiring harness was a pain in the arse.

Also went out to Barnwell for TTR Turkey trot

I thought it was illegal to drive without insurance
 
Got a package from toytec yesterday.



New radiator, fuel filter, and pcv valve is on the way from amazon.

I ordered skids from RCI last Monday, and I still need to finish my rear bumper. I also have lights to install.
March will be full of mods.
Lots to do before Lonestar Jamboree.
 
Finally got to painting me bumper.
Couple of coats of por15.


Then a couple of coats of primer.



Hopefully I'll finish it tomorrow or Saturday. I'm gonna try to have the swing out done by Lonestar Jamboree.

In other news, look what came in the mail today. :rockon:
