Dash Light bub for the heater controls

Has anyone ever had to put in a new light bulb in the heater controls on a 3rd Gen T4r? I am trying to figure out how much pain this is going to be. I have had the center dash panel off to change out the radio and I know how to get to the controls, but do the controls need to be pulled to change the bulb or can it be found without much issue once the panel is removed. Apparently this is a very small bulb and quite expensive as bulbs may go.

:dammit:Nice punt on the information network. However the bulb changeout in the file is missing a large amount of picture info, so still working on the edge to get info. It appears to be a different model dash than my 97 4R. The Toyota dealer did not have bulbs on hand and they would order them. I am not opening that up again until I have them in hand, that way I am not wasting time on the devils work.

P.S. I only have been on here for a few weeks, so I did not know it was here. Good of you to point it out.

That climate control is a newer style, than the one that I have. Mine is a manual control panel with sliding levers on it.
 
I had to search for a long f'n time to get anything concrete, just a day or two ago. True, the guide is missing all but one picture and isn't of much help.

I wanted to know what bulb fit my 99 SR5, so many threads about the limited climate control bulbs and LEDs that it took a while.

Anyway, get a #74 bulb. I believe your vehicle has a single bulb, mine has two, twin pack is five bucks.

I think you just yank the knobs off (or slider head things) and separate the trim plate leaving you with this (from shinyblackdeer's amazing build thread). again, i think you'll have just one bulb in center. toytec had a walk through too on here for getting to the bulbs.

FINALLY! after 44 pages of Habanero's build I found what I wanted to know. That is one long and intricate write up on the daily useage of a T4R.

Now, to add pain to pleasure, the light in my heater control started working this morning---WITHOUT any assistance from me. I am going to replace and check for a loose bulb anyways.

I refer to her build thread fairly often because the '96 4Runners have some unique aspects of their own, and she has already addressed many of the items I need/want to do on my own SR5...

I plan to be in Missouri again sometime this Spring; maybe I can join the MO4WD group for an outing because I plan to bring my 4Runner this time...

That would be awesome, especially if it doesn't fall on a trail build day! I have a feeling that truck of yours has been morphing quite a lot and I'd love to see what all you've done. :happy:

it has morphed quite a bit; actually much more so in just the past two months

I've never even posted any photos of it yet...
 
I have a 98 LTD 4WD, & my climate controls are dials & the slide bars. When I installed a new stereo system I noticed the bulb had like a green coating over it, thinking that it would be brighter I removed the coating now most of the time I have half lights on my controls. I remember the bulbs looking like the infared bulbs you get at Radio Shack (I don't think the Radio Shack ones will work, but that's what they looked like) with the two wires sticking out, you know? Anyway, sometimes if I move the lever from recycled air to open air real fast the light will turn on & now its a dull amber. So I recommend sticking with the stock color it comes with.

Is it just my 4Runner or do they seem to need more lighting in them??? I can't seem to remove the lense cover for my passenger side front bulb. And I have no idea how to get to the bulb in my glove box to replace it... :cry2:

It's been awhile, but as I remember: the glove box light cover has a catch at the back. When you feel it you'll notice it's a little loose and will move back towards you a little. Do that and it should open, hanging on a hinge on the side toward you. If you contort yourself into a circle you'll be able to see what you're doing. The bulb pulls straight out and it's in there good. IIRC, the bulb is also a 74, but I had a problem with one brand of bulb's base being too...long or short, I can't remember, but it wouldn't allow the contacts to touch. I tried another brand and ta da! Lightage! Note: The glove box won't light if the interior lights aren't set to on.
Edit: Actually, the bulb contact problem had to do with the bump at the end of the bulb. The first one I tried had too long of a bump that wouldn't allow the bulb to seat far enough in to allow the contacts to connect.


For people that want to keep the green:
Here is the old bulb (green) next to the new bulb (clear)

Carefully roll the little green bulb condom off the old bulb. Roll onto new bulb.

I have one that doesnt come on all the time, one good flick and it comes on after that, I am planning on switching them to LED soon though.
