dash replacement fail....now a success !!!!!

so I call the phone # from the thread about getting my dash replaced.....I give them my vin # and it's not in their data base!! so I get transferred to another lady who tells me that my 4runner is not from the US.....soooooo she's gonna get back to me because she's trying to figure out where it's from.....hopefully by Friday......this leads to my question is there a way for me to figure out where it's from? I think it was bought by a military guy over seas.....but how do I find out? Thanks.

Did you try logging onto the Toyota.com website(Under the owners tab) and type your VIN to see if there are any entries?

Or even a VIN decoder of some sort?

Here : http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/vin/

If the VIN starts with a J, it was assembled in Japan. It should show where assembled on the driver door jam tag which shows recommended tire pressure, etc.

The issue becomes whether or not it was built for the NA market. Which is what it seems the lady at Toyota Care was implying. The 4Runner is sold outside of the US under the "Hilux Surf" Badge and as the 4Runner in South America if I remember right.

If it was bought in Germany by a serviceman would it not be built for the US and then just sold in Germany?

Mine is from Japan starts with J
i called she looked up my Vin# truck was sold in Nov 2005 (im on the list for dash replacement)

Well even though they assured me they would get back with me by thursday or friday they didn't, hopefully on monday......my vin starts with a J as well.....tried a few online vin decoders but nothing has come up where or what market it was for

Ran the VIN through TIS and it just decoded the basic information. The only history I have on the vehicle is what appears to be a MAF sensor replacement at about 120k. The TIS portal we use in the US is for the North American market as far as I know which means that the vehicle is mostly likely a European or Non-North American Spec 4Runner as far as I can tell. I was under the impression all Non-North American 4Runners were badged as "Hilux Surf" but I could be wrong? In any case, you may need to use a Non-US Vin history website to see if you can get the history of the vehicle from over seas.

That would be true if it were purchased in that specific country, but if the servicemen purchased it through AAFES, it would actually be a US spec car. The Navy Exchange, PX, BX, all have a program where you can buy new American cars when stationed outside the US. I am guessing this is probably one of those. It likely wouldn't show up as a US vehicle since it was delivered outside the US. Since the OP isn't the original owner, he may have a hard time getting this worked out.

It is possible, the issue is that the "In Service Date" and location of the PDS is not shown which makes identifying it difficult. They may need to track down the original owner or at least three original delivery paperwork to rectify the history/applicability.

That is a position I wouldn't want to be in. If I had to be in it, I would be happy to deal with Toyota. I think Toyota handles "Grey Area" matters better than most other car manufactures.

My dad bought a Honda Accord in Germany through the BX. Sent it here to my mom and she had a hell of a time registering it. They kept wanting my dads Canadian passport and papers since that is where they were saying it came from. Wondering if you are running into the same kind of issue.

Thank y'all so much for y'alls help and insight.....i guess at this point i've got to figure out where it was purchased.....toyota still has not called me back even though they assured me they would :( i guess i'll wait awhile longer and if nothing call them back......thanks again

well they finally called me yesterday afternoon.....they are going to cover it!!!!! They still don't know where it's from but since I live in the south (they say the cracking is worse here) they will cover it.....I am really surprised since it wasn't originally purchased in the US but I'm very thankful.....
