Dashboard clock shorting out on 99's?

do any of your dashboard clocks go out at anytime?

i have to tap mine to get it to turn back on.

it happens almost everytime i get in my car.

im wondering if its just my clock or the 99' 4runners clock.

and if it hapened to you, any suggestions so i can get it fixed?

have you pulled the center console out and tried making sure its plugged in all the way

Clock

It's the clock. Search this and other forums and you will find many with the same problem. Part is $300 from dealer and used ones go around $70 on e-bay. Good news is this is the ONLY thing that EVER broke on my '99 SR5 (not counting abuse). I just use the clock on my Alpine H/U. I verified that the switched power lead on my car is fine. I took the silly clock as far apart as humanly possible and I can't trace the fault. I suggest you give up and enjoy the rest of the car.

I bought my '99 about 3 weeks ago. It has the same thing with the clock. I knew it was out when I bought the vehicle but, one day got in and ...it worked! When I first tried to set it, it seemed a bit confused. More like malfunction than a short. After fiddling with the settings for about 30 seconds she worked for perfect for about one day - starting, stopping, bumps etc. The next morning - the "dead square" returned. Been that way for about the last week or so now.

Might try to dive in to check the wire this weekend otherwise I may just settle for the stereo/clock

My 98 does the same thing. Thumping it no longer works.
Between that and my antenna going out I think I am ahead.(Fingers crossed nothing else breaks)

okay, so an update on the clock.

i took the whole center console out and took out the clock completely.

unscrew the clock face and there are little springs.

the springs in my clock were all the way compressed and they werent giving electricity to the clock itself.

so i extended the springs and the clock works all the time now.

hope this helps with all you others with a bad clock.

you have to unscrew the little screws located on the back of the clock once you unplug it.

My 97 does the same thing...it comes on when it wants to and it goes off when it feels like it. I've just ignored it, if I had things apart for something else I'd take a look at it but I don't think I'll tear it down just for the clock.

just pull them out a bit longer than they were originally with your fingers.
