Dashboard 'Drive' Light Burnt Out

Does anyone know if it is a simple task (for someone mechanically inclined) to change the small bulbs that light up the gear indicator on the dasboard? My 'D' indicator doesn't light up anymore when selected. All others still work, that is why I imagine it is the bulb or connector. Any idea what bulb size it would be? My manual doesn't state specifically.

It's pretty easy. All you have to do is remove the trim panel below the steering wheel which is held on by four 10mm bolts. Remove the key surround piece by pulling on it. Then unscrew the trim piece above the steering wheel. After that all you have to do is unscrew a few screws and the gauge cluster will be out. You will also have to unplug three wires. I forgot which bulb size goes back there.
 
Thanks for the help, I'll get to it this weekend and hopefully it's a quick fix. Bulb size isn't a problem, I can pick it up when I take it apart. Toyota wanted $400 for that little fix. Imagine that. Actually it's pretty believable... Sad.
 
$400? Wow. It shouldn't even take them an hour.

Your first time will probably take 15-20 minutes to get it apart, but you get faster each time.
 
If I replace the bulbs with LEDs do they have the same connectors? Would they be sold at a parts store or would I have to order them online? Any info is appreciated. Would they also have the same effect as the bulb? (Other than the actual light provided)

I would also recommend doing this 01sr54x4. The dull green wasn't very attractive to me so I changed mine to white. Others have gone with red or even blue.

If you search on here or Yotatech you should be able to find a thread that has all of the bulbs you would need to buy.

You would probably need to buy them online.
 
Funny thread... The 'D' light is out on a majority of Land Cruisers, and most people prefer that so the light isn't shining in their eyes at night while driving. Every other light in the stack works exc. the 'D'.

Cruiser owners consider it a 'feature'...
 
Well the "D" light would logically be the first to blow because it is on all the time, the rest are only on momentarily.
 
mine has been out since ive owned the car, and i prefer it. those little lights for the gear selector are the brightest on the dash, and this way im not blinded by it.

still gonna switch to white leds soon though :D
 
you could just turn the dimmer knob if the lights are too bright for you. But the light doesn't really matter because it is pretty obvious when you are in drive:p
 
Are you sure your lights arent flipped on. You may have left them on and they are still rotated foward and that makes the D go dim during the day.

Just happened to me today. Thought maybe i'd messed something up playing around with it yesterday, but guess its just its time. Oh well, guess its a matter of time now before the dash conversion :D
 
400?? :AK47: Thats insane- the factory bulb was under $10 and takes like 10-15 min to do lol.. Def do the led upgrade, I wish I had done mine when my drive light went.
 
I wasnt even aware the D was supposed to light up! Im actually pretty happy mine is burnt out, the green ECT light is very annoying at night.
 
Does anyone have the OEM part number for this bulb handy to share or know where I can find it cheap online?

My "D" light burnt out yesterday and I just purchased this truck used about a week ago. I have the habit of "looking" at the front dash while changing from park to drive, I never look down... (I'm lazy)

I have 01 sr5 4x4. I never noticed if the gear selector on the console light up. Is there a bulb out there too. (my D light on cluster is out now)
