No I sure didn't see that. That trail got a lot harder in the afternoon after some of the rocks got moved around though. My buddy Evan blew two hubs in there on his D44 during the afternoon. It was the first trail we hit in the morning but didn't give it another go since there was always a line of rigs parked in it from that point on.

yeah I thought i'd give it a go when no one was on the trail since i only had a front locker. I had gotten past the first turn off to the left and almost to where it splits again before i couldn't get any further. Then a line of about 10 rigs come up behind me. I tried to back up and pull out to the right and got stuck sideways in the middle of the trail for a minute because my right hub had came unlocked and i didn't know. I ended up having to winch up a offshoot the right side because people never stopped coming.

Flatlander

Hey guys,

Ill be coming up from Tampa, FL for a week at the end of March. We have a Cabin in Fleetwood which isnt too far from Boone or surrounding areas. Would anyone be down for little off road trip around this time? Not used to actually having some terrain and altitude involved offroading. Should be a good time and awesome experience to meet some 4Runner folks from another region.

My rig isnt equiped with a winch so im sure i would need some assistance and some patience at one point but I am definitely willing to try. Let me know if anyone is interested.

kpd1999 and myself went up as far as the first big step in the creek today and turned around.

Holy crap Marines, I don't know what to tell ya. Either time to upgrade vehicles or upgrade operators I reckon, lol. Just given y'all shit.

Well looks like you got out ok, thankfully. Running Richland backward (going down) is a whole other ball game from what I've heard.

Whats considered going down. North to south? or running it south to north? I still need to get out there. Once Brown Mtn. opens I'll be down to a trip. Living at the coast blows sometimes.... :hungry:

Down would be from the top of the mountain to the bottom, haha jk. Yeah, down would be starting from the north end and driving south.

I still would like to check out Brown myself. The one time that I went, the OHV trails where closed for the season. I've heard it isn't all that great though for trucks. It's good for ATV's though.

I know what you mean by being on the coast though. I lived in Charleston for a couple of years and I was even stationed out by where I assume you're at for a few years. I love being where I'm at now. Pretty central to everything. Big city access, with country living, with day trips to the coast or mountains feasible.

Let me know when you guys want to go to Brown....It opens back up next month.

Yep, its about 35 miles of ATV only trails, and there is one 4x4 trail that is about 6 miles one way (ping-pong). Not difficult by any means, but still plenty of fun, and it is a nice change from other trails. It is similar terrain to the easier trails at URE, but all uphill.

Let me clarify, we turned around because we didn't have enough time to run it and complete the other run we were headed to. I wanted to show CplTurner some of the tougher spots. Hopefully we'll be getting back up there soon to run it.

I'm not from out your way, but my folks live near there on the TN side of things. A couple summers back I talked my sister into taking her Outback someplace that could have gotten in trouble. The definition of a road out your way is quite different than out my way! But since a factory Outback did these, it's barely a light drive for a 4Runner. It's also rather pretty, easily something you can take the wife along to enjoy the scenic waterfalls and streams. It's also something I'd like to do again, albeit with my 4Runner. And since I've already seen Laurel Falls, I might skip the hiking bit and do more driving.
Google Maps drive
We started on paved road at the Dennis Cove Trailhead for the AT, and had done the hike down to Laurel Falls. It was serene and well worth seeing, even it means a little more than hiking 2 miles each way from Dennis Cove Trailhead. Hiking in from the Laurel Falls Trailhead is shorter, but involves more altitude changes.
Once you depart the Dennis Cove Trailhead in vehicle, go east on down to the parking area at the southern point into Frog Hollow. When we were there, the fire road on the other side of the stream ford was barred closed, but it looks like that would sure be fun! We parked, and did the short (300ft) hike through the vegetation up to Firescald Branch Falls. This really is incredibly a short hike to see a very hidden cascade that is ignored by just about everyone but locals.
Leaving Frog Hollow meant backtracking a little, up Rough Ridge Rd. Instead of heading back the way we came, I had her follow the "road" further into rough country. We eventually decided it was well worth it as there's nothing out there, and the drive along Little Stony Creek Rd was stunning and as peaceful as could be. And we did eventually reach pavement again at US-321, right where I wanted to come out!
If you wanted to head further south, it looks like you could take Walnut Mountain Rd back southeast, if the rest of Rough Ridge Rd is barred, or if you just wanted to go a different way. We were headed back north towards Mountain City, so that wasn't really for us that day.
Again this aren't challenging 4x4 trails, but scenic drives that often require 4WD (or in this case AWD). I have seen trails around here that are in better shape than those "roads."

Anyone heading to Uwharrie this weekend? I'll be out on the dirtbike on Saturday for a while. Probably parking in the double parking lot.

Bringing back an older thread but is anybody still using Richland rd at all? Im going to be camping up that way next month and wanted to see if I can roll with some locals to the trail with my 4runner

Darklight had mentioned heading up there this Saturday. I'd love to get up there and catch the leaves, but Saturday didn't work out for me. All of October is looking like a bust actually.
