For a scenic drive from Boone to Old 105 take the following route, this is a mix of dirt/gravel and small country roads
Start in downtown Blowing rock by getting gas and a sandwich at the blowing rock market.
Turn right onto Globe Rd.
Take Globe Rd (FS Road 1537) south
Turn Left (south) on Anthony Creek (FS Road 1367)
Turn Right where it ends at 90
Follow 90 and make a pit stop at Betsey's Ole Country Store
(from here you could turn left and take Brown Mountain Beach Rd to Adako which follows the river and is pretty, but it means you would have to climb back up the mountain to get to the start of Old 105 at Linville)
Continue on 90 past Betsey's
Turn Left (West) on Pineola Rd (FS Rd 464)
Continue on this Rd, the road name on google eventually changes to National Forest Rd and Old Mortimer Rd but it is still FS Rd 464
FroM long Ridge Church you can either head a little North and jump onto the Blueridge Parkway or a little southwest to jump directly to 181.
if on Hwy 181 turn right onto Hwy 183 and Old NC 105 starts as a gravel rd right there beside Biggerstaff Ave.
If the weather is nice Old 105 will be crowded to the visitors center, then less crowded to wiseman's view (this is a short left turn off 105 which you will want to stop at) then much less crowded all the way down to Lake James. From there you can jump onto 40 and head home.
For waterfalls, here is a map of a bunch of waterfalls you can checkout:

For exploring Pisgah I recommend downloading the FS maps or buying a paper copy. You won't have a cell signal but if you have a map it will be hard to get lost.
