UPDATE: The issue with my truck was not the Daystar Lift. The mechanic at the stealership disconnected the XREAS at the shock and not at the disconnect points on the system itself, thus creating an air lock in the shock. I retract the title of this thread and it should read "Incompetent Dealership Mechanics"



I had the stealership put on my front lift and I put on the rear lift...now I have a clanking sound/feel when I go over bumps and it feels like a shock is loose. I took it back to the stealership today and they said I need new shocks due to the altered suspension and the piston travel of the shock is "bottoming out". I have the XREAS system. I am at a loss on what to do. The only reason I went with this lift kit was because all the positive things people on this forum said about it. The ride is bouncier than from stock and I have that "loose shock" sound now. Any ideas? :mad:

i have no experience with the daystars, but i don't like any kit that uses spacers.

i got the bilstein 5100 kit all around with OME rear and it's as quiet as stock.

Before I went to coilovers I had a cornfed 3/1 and FJ springs (yielding around 3.25/1.5 inches of lift) and I did not have these problems. I also had XREAS and although it is stiffer, the shocks were able to handle it fine.

I would check all the bolts to make sure that they are tight. Is the noise/feeling coming more from the front or rear of the vehicle?

The dealer screwed up! I'd make sure the shocks are tight in the rear. I would make sure they re-installed the spare tire and the tools correctly; finally I'd make sure the 6 nuts (three on each side) at the top of the front struts are tight.


If that's all over your head check the spare and the tools. Take it to a 4wd savvy shop and tell them you have a rattle/clank on a setup you KNOW has been successful with many other 4Runners. You're willing to give them 1 hour labor to tighten/inspect. That's it. The dealership is giving you a story so stupid the village idiot couldn't have come up with it...


What Blair, J.A. and few others offer should be taken as Gospel.

I think the boys at the Stealership did not tighten something up correctly. I have the same spacer kit on my '04 Sport model on factory shocks and with the XREAS and it worked perfectly. I had a buddy who owns a front end shop do the install and alignment and my 4 Runner drove not much different than stock with the factory size tires. When I went with 265/70/17 Revos, that was when I felt a difference - a little more rougher ride with the taller A/T tire.
 
Like everyone said, the dealer screwed up...because there are plenty of us running DS and even more running other brand lift spacers without the issues you describe. Sounds like perhaps a sway bar bracket is too loose. Take a read thru my write up and check all the nuts referenced for proper tightness. I know and understand that not everyone has the time, space, etc. to do this stuff themselves, but this is just another reason to back the saying "if you want it done right DIY". Good Luck.

Honestly more like the rear..however..yesterday when I had the stealership put just the front lift on, when I drove it home with just the front lift on I could here the noise coming from the back then..I figured that something was out of whack because I did not have the rear lift on yet, so this a.m, I put the rear lift on..noise is still there and more obvious today than yesterday. I am going out there now to take a better loook at it with a creeper and recheck all nuts and bolts. Let me know if you can think of anything else.
 
Exactly what kind of lift did you get, spacers on top of the coils in the rear? Longer coils? When I had my stock coils and 2.5" spacer replaced with the OME 891 coils, it made a clanking sound like something was loose everytime I bounced, but stopped after a few mile of driving, and has been fine ever since. I just figured that the coils or one of them did not get properly seated during the install. If you went 1.5 or even 2.5 on a suspension lift, your stock shocks should still be ok, until you do some flexing or off-camber. I am not familiar with the XREAS system you refer to, even though I have seen it mentioned on this forum several times. I would double-check to make sure that everthing is properly installed before replacing shocks or blaming on the lift kit.

Damn, that sure would do it. Sorry you found these forums after you had your lift installed as it is warned time and time again disconnect the XREAS system at the correct place or better yet dont take a chance and do the install without disconnecting at all. At least its a Toyota dealer that did the install, b/c since they should know the correct procedures they should cover their mistake.
 
I hope that if the dealership disconnected the XREAS shocks for the install, they did so in the correct location. You would think they would know how to do it right but......

that or I was thinking they left out one or more strut bushings on the top plate.
 
you deserve a "FAIL" for letting the dealership to the mod.

I wouldn't trust them to change my oil. I have a custom skid plate, I don't think any of these yahoo's know how to take it off or put it back on.

I hear ya...the only reason I took it there was because of the XREAS system, figuring they would know how to PROPERLY disconnect it because they deal with these type of ssystems and have had SOME training on them as well compared to a local mom and pop auto repair place. But dont worry, me and the service knuckle heads are going to have a talk tomorrow. I am going on the notion that the XREAS system was not properly disconnected and that their is a "lack of fluid" and an air lock in the system because the ride is bouncier now..kind of like I do not have any shocks on it.
 
What would happen if the XREAS system was taken apart and reinstalled back on my truck and if the mechanic didnt replace the fluid that was lost? Would my ride be bouncier and would the shocks make a clanking sound when going over bumps at low speeds?
